OFFICE OF THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE, /
WEDNESDAY, April 1, 1868.
Gold is dull and lower, more on account
of the scarcity' of money, than the light de
mand. 'Government securities 'cvere_lower
in the afternoon, with more :disposition to
sell, and but light -deniand for invest-
meat. It is, howevei, expected that with
the improvement of the money market, a
large investment will absorb all that is of
fered at ailvanced rates.
The stock market' N • firin arid rather
higher, but cash sales have pi evented an
advance; the large SaTei for'fithire delivery
shows the operators
,have, impfidence in
higher prices. The money market is as
stringent as it possibly can be for the first
of April. Railroad bonds; sharps and, bank
stocks find but feW buyers, except a few
stocks, which sell - above their real value.

—Quite an important question is being
discussed in financial circles in this city at
present. If is what is a judgfilent note
worth? Hitherto it has been supposed that
a confessien of judgment was held good'in
law against the property of the party
making the confession; but the question is
now likely to be tested in the United States
Courts. The circumstances of the ease are
as follows: Dunlop Bros., of this city, bor
rowed some twenty or more thousands of
'dollars from, the first National Bank, of
this city, onjudgmont notes, which are now
past due. Th? same firm owed Clafiin
'Bros., of New 'York, about $15,000 for goods
purchased from time to time. The Clafilins
got clamorous for their money, and sent an
agent to this city to enforce payment some
way. He,.. finding that the bank had a
prior claim in the shape of judgment notes,
called on the banker and demanded that
the latter give_ up all security and 'go in,
equal shares with the Chifiln Bros.; and
that if the bank would not ,consent to that
he (the agent aforesaid) would force Dun
lop Bros, into bankruptcy. Of-course, the
First National bank refused.to give up its
security; but offered. to give the firm. ten
months time longer, if Claflin Bros. would
do as they tuld offered, give them twelve,
months tune. But this proposition was re
jected, and the bank.had to enter judgment
to protect itself. •As soon as this was done,
Claflin Bros. forces the ,firm into bank
ruptcy for the purpose"of , forestalling the
claims of the First National. Bank. •
The question is an important one to ban
kers, for if ajudgment note is no better se
curity than a merchants due bill, it is high
time they knew it. Or if a debtor to a
bank can get some friendly creditor to
force him into bankruptcy, then there
ought to be some differeut triode of lending
money than that now in vogue.-Chicago

The demand seems to be concentrated al
most entirely •on the early Months; and
notwithstanding there is considerable in.
quiry, refiners are still. inclined to hold

a very good - one, that, there is no Margin;
and like other men, they ate not disposed
SO take the risk when there is no promise
of any return. Another thing that tends
•to Itepp the market quiet, is the' stringency,
in money matters, which deters specula
