RIVER NEWS
Both rivers continue to recede steadily at
this point with eleven feet in the Monon
gahela and ten in the Allegheny. The
weather ye i sterday was clear and pleasabt;
in the afternoon the sky was slightly over
cast with clouds. and we should not be sur
prised to see it raid again inside of twenty
four hours.
The foil/wing boats were in_port yester,
day afternoon: Messenger, Armenia;
America, Kate Putnam, Glasgow, Lenir

The Echo is the regular packet for Oil
City to-morrow, leaving- about fouro'clock

The Wauanita cleared for Missouri River.

she will doubtless fill out at Steubenville
Wheeling and other . .points below. :

We understand that;some of the diggers
up the Mononela have gone to work at

be remembered,, there was an- effort -made
some days since by the pit owners to duce the price of digging from fourto three
cents per bushel; the fact that -some of the
diggers, have gone to work at 4hree and a
halt cents would' indicate that a campro 7

Only Chance and Cora left for Renton, with
a few passengers. A Mr. Codgelli who was
in St. Joseph yesterday, is seventy-three
years old. He has his sixth wife and thirty
two children, to each of whom he.has giVen
a farm. He is still worth over $lOO,OOO, and
cannot read.. The heaviest snow storm •)f
the season visited 'Cheyenne and along the
Union pacific Railroad yesterday. Several
trains were snowed in. The river here is
about stationary. . The,. rain continued
falling all night, and the sky is still
clouded. -
The New York left Cincinnati for Pitts
burgh on Thursday, and the. Leonidas and
Argosy were advertised to tollow on Fri
day. '
Says the Cincinnati • Cominercial: Mr.
Dan. Morton L after following the_profession
of - steamboat Vidhling in Cincinnati for
nearly thirty years, has conchided to retire
to the quiet life of farming. He has built a
number of the fastest and most splendid
steamers navigating the, Western and
Southern waters, including' the Telegraph,
Jacob Strader, United States, America,
Natchez, Princess and,. Charmer. In the
meantime,-he has lost en independent for
tune in baddebtS. He is still full of vigor,
and, we fear he will find! country lifeltoo
quiet for his active chaacteristics. • His
long and able ekperience, dinirably quali
fies-him for superintendin the construe

tion of steamers. '
. Captain Symnies has bought the steamer
Guidon of Captain Dan Able, and sold to
the latter his interest in the Mollie Able.
The Guidon was valued at $12;000 in the
trade, and the Mollie Able at $70,000.
Symmes will take the Guidon to Fort Ben
ton. _ • '.
The Louisville Courier says Capt. L. De
Haven is on his way to that city to close
contracts for building his now steamer Al
pha at that place. The Meniphls papers
say, however, that he is on his way to Mad
ison to superintend the building of his new
steamer.
The Cairo Democrat says Captain Conway
of the., Marble City, put a poor 'woman and
her twq children ashpre. in the woods• some
distance from any holtse or shelter.
The; Messrs. tattimers, who entered snit
for ffinuages against the city of Columbus,
Ky., for the loss of the steamer P. B.
Cheeney, have lost their suit upon the plea
that action was barred byy_ the statute of
limitation. -It will:beremembered that the
boat was seized at. Columbus, by unknown
parties in 1881, and forciblY carried South.
The Louisville Courier - says that, in old
times, they hadm daily line of packets be
tween that port and St. Louis, and sugg,ests
that one or more boats like the Legal Ten
der could make regular paying trips now.

wrecks, of steamboatmen that a few years
ago were among . the most respected of that
class. Any day there Can be Seen hanging
around a store near Olive'street, a wreck of
a man—a miserable looking shattered man,
clad in rags, with a pinched. hungry look,
and that vacant; aindess2mtare .which tells
of hope and energy totally blasted and gone
—a man, Who; not long SIIICO,WAS: the "glass.
of fashion and the mould of form." FiVe
or six .years ago we knew him as a com
mander of one of our finest. Mississippi
steamers—a proud; capable spirited man of
business, with reputation and resources
sufficient to sustain any enterprise. There
was a'day when he Was considered rich and
could have retired from the worlds stage ,a
happy num.. Poor, poor man! To-dav he
lives on charitv, knowing not often where
he will get the scant meal that keeps life;
now and then picking up a little front
friends who knew hint in the glad days of
'his prosperity. To look upon his wasted
form, and depressed, forlorn face, he pre
sents a sad wreck upon the sands of time.
