The gold.market is unusually quiet, with

Government bonds ' were dull and lower
early in the day, but at noon quotations
had slightly improved, with. a very light
'deinand. Opinions are very much divided
on the-course of the Government securities;
the general impression is that the market
Will be lower on account of the scarcity of
money, but if "business remains dull and
unprofitable,.government securities will be

forethonpenin of inland navigation, and
the commencen eat Of' seasonable trade :tie ,
yond the seaboard and the West. The time
is now near at hand when the annual East
ern movement' of produce will set in. The
receipts, both by land, and water, will prei.
l 'lsibly be large during the month of April,
requiring large amounts of ready capital
for their. handling and transfer;•and,should
r our moneyed institutions, with a continued
poverty of resources, be unable to - respond
to the call that - is sure to be made upon
them, the cons.equences must be disastrous
both to the Commercial and producing in
terests.. Fortunately, no emergency of that
kind is now anticipated; 'though it may be
well to look ahead and be prepared • for

coming events.
The prospectiveropeai of the inarmfactut

hemp, metals, leather, hide§,and other raw
materials, stimulating consumer§ to lay in
stoeks, and causing them More readily to

hand, buyers of manufactured products are_
operating more cautiously amlsparingly, in
the hope that the lifting of this burthen of
taxation, which is borne chiefly by the con
sumer, will enable theirs by-and-by, to sup
' ply theniselvesjit a reduced cost.
—Money is active in Boston at 6 per cent.
for call loans upon Governments,. and 63,', to

the demand, and money upon call is riot

loans are very high-perhaps fully as high
as can be sa'ely carried over the cominn• re

do not command any premium this week.

CATTLE.
There was• next to nothing done at these
yards during the past week, the sales.being
very insignificant—hardly worth reporting.
During the faliand in the early part of the
winter, it wag' nothing unusual to have .
sales of fromtwo to four thousand head of
Cattle, per week—now , the 'Bales do not
reach that many hundreds; and, 'what is
worse still, there is but little prospect at
present of any immediate improvement.
The yards prewnt a very dull appearance,
nearly all the pens being empty, and while
there aiehutserY feW buyers, it is equally
true that Cattle are almost as scarce as pur

much towards keeping buyers away, Its
