Gold was very weak to-day, opening, 'at .
128 m, and clbsing dull at 138. GoVernment
bonds declined with gold, and closed 'at
about one per cent lower than last night,
with large offers to sell, in anticipation of a
tight money market.
Stocks'are'dull and lower, with no 'dispo
sition to buy for the .present. The local
money market is also bare of any loose
funds, preparatory to the April payments;
those who have it holdlback in anticipation
of some turn in the market. Bank stocks
are offered freely at concessions.
Mr. A. J. Baker has resigned the presi
dency of the Coal Mens' Trust Company,
and is succeeded by Mr. W. S. Anderson,
Mr. E. J. ROberts still remains cashier, and.
the concern is said to ben good 'condition
and doing a very good business.

—The Assistant Treasurer in NOW York
has been selling gold and buying seven
thirties. Mr. McCulloch possesses the
power to relieve the money market by
using the balance, $25,285,000 of the- three
per cent. legal-tender certificates. Mr. Mc-
Culloch has already.reeeived and cancelled
the compound interest-notes , which Con
gress intended should have been replaced
by the three per cent. certificates. The out
standing balance of compound interest
notes is-only $(3,163,0(K), and the right to is-!
sue at once $10,122,000 of the three per cent:
certificates is -certainly already'vested in
the Secretary of the Treasury, or otherwise
the law of Congress to issue _them has be
come a nulity.. The act of Congress inten
ded these three per cent. certificates to take
the place of the compound interest notes, at
the time they were cancelled, in August,
1867, which was not done, by the Secretary
of the Treasury. It is stated that the gov
ernment balance is unusually low; why
then not use the three per cent. legal cer
tificates to releive the necessities of the
Geverrunent and the mercantile commu
nity?

ter to Senator Sherman, Chairman, of the
Senate Committee' on Finance regarding
the house bill abolishing the tax on manu
factures, and argves . that so" great a redno
tion in prices will result that .our markets
will be less desirable :for foreign produe- .
tions and importations, therefore dimin
ished so as to impair-Ahe revenues Trona,
Customs. While admitting that it is ex
•eedingly desirable that taxes should be
reduced, he is apprehensive that such a re
duction of revenue would leave an insuffi
ciency of income to meet the interest on the
public debt and the current expenses of
the Goverriment.

between now and. the first of May, seller's
option, at B%c; also, 107 bbls at BNc, bbls
returned ' Spot oil cannot fairly be quoted
above 836 c to -day, against Bxe yesterday,
and oven at this reduction, 'buyers did not
appear to be very aii.Nious to take hold,
though they are - always backward about
buying when the -market has 3 drooping
tendency., • Future 'deliveries are un
changed, nominally, and, the absence of
sales, yesterdays quotations may be, re
garded as the standard of values. We have
no advices from Oil City to-day, but, we
presume, there is no change; one thing,
.howeVer, is generally conceded, prices are
still too much inflated at that point for this
market. '
REFIXED—The market for bonded oil
Is quiet and unchanged. -But two sales re-'
ported, two five hundred barrel lots for
April, seller's option option, at 25e. March
is still quoted at ZlMAY2l%6;while for May,
June and July, there seems•to bone eharige
whatever: • There is still considerable in
quiry for present and future deliveries,. and
we, would haVe plenty of sales to report,
were it not for the fact that.there are but
very few sellers at the pziees , offered; -re
finers clairn, and with• good reason, too,
that takingthe present prices of crude and
refined, there Is no margin, and hence they
prefer:keeping their oil to selling with 'no
