FINANCE AND TRADE,
OFFICE OF THE PITTSBURG* GAZETTE,
MONDAY, March 23, 1808.
Gold advanced sharply this - morning to
140; onthe.presumption that the, President
would seek to gain time and his trial post r
timed to an indefinite period, but unexpec
. tedly the President himself •is anxious to,
have the trial proceed, bring it to a close,
and remove all causes for excitement; in
consequence, thereof, the market declined
to 13936; and closed at 138 bid. The scar
.city of money may cause some 'further de
cline in gold, but commercially viewed the
market showed tmadvance, so long asour
imports exceeds mir exports to such a large
percentage—the currency value last Week
was eight millions; or nearly six millions
11ngitffitto whiehudd freight, other charges
, and' differenee in the market \tine, and
Mil
$lOO,OOO
the declarative value of Ihe merchandise
and seven, millions gold value, is the true
estimate.
. .
Government bonds openedl less buoyant
1 than on Saturday, but during the _early
part of the day were steady, After the de
i cline in gold they receded about per
cent. c old bonds, and ,4 to g per cent. on.
new and currency bonas, with large offer
ings. The expected tightness of the money
market, about • April will hasten a further
decline, even if only temporary. -
Stocks are improving, and a renewed ,
contest between the two .rival• parties hi
Erie is looked for, and 'since other stocks
generals - follow', the market price of the
large roads, it is likely that another sharp
rise will take place dniing the week, to be.
sneceeded by a heavier fall; the bears will
haVe the benefit of the_first of April scare,
usual at quarter statement day for national
'yanks. ,
=I
Money - is scarce for small borrowers or
men doing an irregular business; otherwise:
1 7
capitalis s are well supplied with .loanable
funds in the shape of bonds, which are rea
dily. con ertible. Take it all together, the
stringency in the money market is less felt
new than was anticipated, because "every
body was prepared for it.

in order to effect sales. Prices are still sus
tained at 011 City, ranging from $3,10 to

this market, as will be apparent to any one
conversant with the trade.

CATTLE.
There was again a short supply of cattle
on sale to-day, and with the usual retail de- I
mend, the market was firmer and good
prices Were realized, though Compared with
last week there s is no advance. The quality
of cattle was fully up, to the usual average I
with the' exception , that there was no pre
mium
stock; if there had heen, it would
doubtless have brought last weeks' prices.
We quote fair to good butchers cattle at 607;

at 9to 9 1 / 0. Stockers continue to meet
with a steady demand, and sell without
much difficulty at 5.,;c• to 634 c, as to quality.
There were no eastern buyers in attend- ;
:Ince, and there was but one drove bought
to ship east:-Myers &Needy shipped three
car loads to Baltimore. Philadelphia, it
seems, is getting a good many cattle from
Baltimore, and many of thee buyers, who
used to buy and ship from I re every week, ,
are now buying in that ina ket.

the Conamunipaw yards are likely to be,
used up. Alexander . moves, through that
, medium, from 500 to 800 per week. I give
