    MRS. SENATOR SPRAGUE AND
- •
PRESIDENT' JOHNSON,
paragraph Is going the rounds of the
papers to the effect that Mrs. Sritacittz is
bringing her influence to bear on her hus
band and father -in favor of President.
JOHNSON and againat impeachment. There
may be more in this than a casual observer
would suppose._ . :The question of rank or
precedence is notmore 'closely contested in
any European: Court than in our Re
publican Capitol, Col. BENTON and Chief
Justice TANEY had a little feud,. which I
only_ ended with their lives, about: prece-,
deuce. Should a United States 'Senator
rank a Judge of the Supreme COUrt? That'
was the question which the haughty persis
tence 6f the eagle-faced Colonel bat parti
idly settleci :::‘,,the affirmative; for, although
a U. S. S., will not often Condescend to leave
his card for aJ. S. C., the '4 4 , Cs. are sloW
to aCknowledge their duty to pay, the tes
.pect of a call upon a U. S. 5. Of course
this is a question in which ladies take an ac
tive interest, and no one has distinguished
herself morein it than MrS. SPRAGUE.
-In the early days of, the , war the, ;young
poierrtor ofßhode Island, who raised a reg
iment at his own risk, and went to suppress
the rebellion, was quite a hero of romance.
Loyaliadieiwere not so abundant'in Wash
' ington as after LEE'S surrender; and,. What
with hat - wit; beauty, gracious manners, her
father's position, and the affianced of the
Rhode Island millionaire-patriot-Governor-
/ Colonel, Miss CHASE occupied a very prom
inent position, and believed herself entitled
to precedence as "First Lady" in the Gov
ernment. She contested her claim with
LurcoLs, who, as "Lady of the kite
House," was, by common Consent, award
rel that eminence. There had d heen several
passages at arms between them, and Mrs.'
Inicorx felt deeply aggrieved ,when Miss
: Crrasg was at the White House, either by
special invitation, or to introduce atm&
friends, I forget which,. Mrs. Lrfccor.x,
in an =liable desire to promote harmony, re--
minded her that she had not seen her for some
andlopecl she= would mil again soon.
ilys. SPRAGUE haughtily replied that she
lad - generally been athome, and that if Mrs.
- Lrisibotof had wished tb see her she could
most probably have gone so by returning
her previous call. My informant, a lady
who was present at thir time, thought Miss
CrresE's manner as offensive as the open
, claim to equal rank was unjust and injudi
' .eious n and feltlhat Mrs. LINCOLN was fully
justified in ever afterwards refusing, to treat
her with any pretense of kindnesS, or to
attend her wedding. Those who knew the
- history of 3liss Ccasc's refusal to accord to
-- 3lrs - . Lnicomr the precedence to which she
• was =questionably entitled, felt that Mr.
LINCOLN did wrong in attending that wed
ding, and thns giving ' the haughty bride a
triumph over his wife-
Mrs-- SVrtacuE's desire to be "First
Lady" amounts almost to a mania; and, no
- %-doubt, has much to do 'with her father's
Presidential aspirations. While Mr. JOHN
' :sox is President she will have little active
-opposition in her chtim to . that dignity in
- right of her treble rank of wealth, wife pf a
' 'Senahy and daughter of the Chief Justice;
for Mrs. PATTERSON is a woman of little Or
no self-assertion. What with the intemper
ance of her husband and brother, the-care of
her invalid mother and her four children,
she has little time to attend to the dignity of
er position, and, with her earnest devotion
to her father,; would defer to Mrs. SPRAGUE,
if by so doing she could wih any support ,to
- - that father. On the other hand, Mis. WADE
• will hold any position to which she. may be
assigned, and which she accepts. Mrs:
'SPRAGUE has ever undertaken to asiert any
superiority over her, the sprightly rand as
piring ladY no doubt retired from he con
filet reeling that she had won no laurels.
Mrs. Want is very unpretending in dress
, and manners, and 'to see her and her hus
band, in'a street car, as I hilve' done, return
ing from a hospital visit, after Senate hours,
one
..,might mistake them for a well-to-do
farther and his hale oldwife; but there is a
reserved force of good sense= and dignity in
- her manner which would make itself felt in
Li r the lowest hovel or most brilliant drawing
room. If she goes into the White House
there will be no room for dispute as to who
is" First Lady," in this demCcratic:
land.‘ Hence there Is no doubt Mrs.
SPnitotrz . would not wish to see her ,
in that position espeoially as MRS. WADE, in
common with thousands of the people' of
-Ohio, must remember, with grave disap
-': provah the youthful folly of the spoiled
'beauty who brought' public scandal on her
' father's itdministratiOn, while he was. Gov-
ernor of that State. ...Even at that school girl
age she 'had' sufficient tact and influence .
• with him to baffle his wisest councellors,
in, their efforts to, remove her favorite, a
handsome, dissolUte; married man, from his
position under the Government One morn- I
ing the city of Columbus was thiown into
great excitement by the announcement, in
the morning papers, that the Governor had
undertaken to - horsewhip the handiome,
.•
gentleman, and had been shot in the renam
't re ; but Miss Kate clutched the helrn so
firmly as to carry her little bark through the
- storm 'withoUt throwing her Jonah over
-board. Her influence with her father is al
most unlimited, and to that - source was art:
-edited his active opposition to an increase of
salary to female claims at a time when they
:received ON 4 sear, and she paid juii this
amount for a wedding viel.
= • Mu. WADE is -so thoroughly her op
- posite, being heart - and soul , interested in all
.. - true efforts -to aid the lowly, while
maintaining her own dignity, rendering
- honor to whom honor is due, that there is
no doubt, in my mind, but Mits. SeniurrE
will strain every nerve to prevent her being
'• - placed in a imition to dispose of :her own
-claim to the title of "First Lady." • '

No striking novelties are hriported this
season. Short walking' dresses, 'gored in
every width, to . fit the hips, with double
skirts And short paletots, cut in vandykes or
tabs to match the-upper skirt, Will be worn,
as well as polonaise suits, and short pointed

with demi-train and paletot mantelet. Marie
Antoinette :dresses, with single skirt just
touching the ground, and fichu,of the..same
materials, with ends to fall behind, are pop
ular for young ladies. The fabrics in fayor.
for street costumes are silk serges, a twilled
satiny - material of good width, at $2.25 a
yard, in graiT colors, silks in hair stripes
and tine checks, fancy poplins, chene in
colors, granite poplins and taffetas- in steel
gray, .like pongee, mohairs and Swiss pop
lins in stripes, the latter a silk and linen
fabric, with precisely the appearance of
Lyons taffeta, and very beautiful. at $1.30 a

white Maltese trim rich dresses and paletots.
Every article of dressy toilet is now pro ,
:deiced in lama lace. Parasols; tichus,
shawls, hounces, overdresses are made
with almost the effect of point lace, at one
fifth the cost.- The ambition of ball room
belle's now is' to obtain "cafe of the lace
dresses.woven to fit the figure, ; with low
neck and shoulder straps, to be worn above
- The net-Work and medallion or Pyra
mid patterns are in better taste in lama or
inferior 'laces than the flower designs,.which
appear fitting 'only for expensive point.
Trimmings en. militaire .are popular for
Skirts and jacketei also deep pointed and over
lapping tabs, bound and fringed with con
trusting color, and. braids of satin on the
seams of dresses. The sash continues to be
an indispensable part of the toilet, both for
home dress and paletots. The rings with
_which they are worn are made of every ma
terial; those of passementerie are best adap
ted to ordinary -use.
For house and evening dress delicate
chameleon silks are imported of new shades,
impossible to be described, but oftenest giv

Evenini , dresses are made with short
apron fronts fastened to the train with bd
quets, with thin overskirts looped at the
sides, and a few are flounced to the waist.
The corsage is short, the gored skirt still the
only one worn, with the fullness left in the
train, and the clime sleeve retains its favOr.
Spring bonnets are the Fanchon and
Marie Antoinette shapes of the Winter, made
a trifle, flaring. Yellow and • light black
straws with insertions' of silk and satin.
'Some hats of silk galoon, in brown and
gray, are made up on frames, and are pret
tier than Neapolitan. For dressy toilets,
hats are worn of light colored Mahnes lace,
which is a tulle powdered by some process
that Makes it look as if dipped in dew in
mrial fabric, so beautiful as to require scarce
ly any trimming,
except the Mantilla bail of
the same, Which falls from the back of the
honnetand forms the strings, or front of the
.drapery. Very trans Parents hats are ad
mired, a single thiekness of. tulle or Malines
lace'' being thrown over a .wire foundation,
showing the. dressing, of the hair. A lighter
affair for head dress could:not be devised.
Trimmings consist of drape braids, nar
row -rich ribbons, straw fringes, and gulots,
with a variety_ of new Straw ornaments, very
fanciful end pretty; translucent leaves, steel
veined and powdered; the flowers are large
open reses, with full golden centres, narcis
sus, Parmese violets, crocus feathers; cedar
wreaths,
.and aqdatie• grasses,. arbtttuS, ! and
tropic blossoms..
The Spanish high crowned hat, with -brim, will be popular for a riding hat,
though' hardly adopted for the promenade
this season. Low round crowns, with roll ,
ing brims, hi gray or yellow straw, will be
worn in round hits. Plaits of velvet encir-.
cling the crown ' double wreaths of tiny
flowers, lace bands with plumes of aquatic
leaVesin.crape, and knots of field flowers,
are thelrimming. Mantilla and half 'mask
veils are in great favor. SHIRLEY DARE.
