The Allegheny river was again rising at.
this point last evening with eighteen feet.

eighteen feet reported, and twenty-two feet

• The Peninah, one of Com. Kountes now
inountain steamers left on Smithy and yes
terday morning was lying at Steubenville,
taking on nails.. We understand that she
has also considerable freight - engaged at

Capt. Stockdale left the Sallie at Bellair
yesterday, and came- from there home by
rail. Ho reports that she performed ad
mirably in every particular, and , that she
wi7l lie faSter than lie even expected.
The towboats Sam Brown, Antelope and
Grand._ Lake' departed yesterday with
heavy tows of coal. - IL is reported that
there are five towboatslaid up this side
of the Steubenville Bridge waiting for the
, river to fall before they can . pass under.
This bridge has occasioned several disasters
'to the coal fleet, and is regarded by Steam
,boatinen generally-as a public nuielariee.'
The,Bellevernon, froin Louis, was due
here last night and will doubtle&s be found
in port this morning: .
Last- evening at dusk the Allesheny
marks showed nineteen and a half teat-=a
rise of twelve inches in one 'hour and a

to New York. Corn, the great, western
staple usually: seeks alnarket and an out
let in.:New Orleans, as the increased, pro
duct of the valley of the Wabash, the Ohio,
and the, .Mississippi has, always fonnd that
the most accessible as well as the point to
be reached at less than hair the expense of
transportation to New. York. Now, how
ever, the -prices are in.favor of New York
so largely that, together with the fact that
there is a lack of sailing vessels in that port

day, says: The Northern Line commences
operations by dispatching the Davenport
on 'Monday to the highest point attainable.
The Keokuk, Quincy and Peoria packets
bring in full cargoes. The immense Mollie.
Able loads in competition with the Atlan
tic -Line. She will take • out a full cargo of
about. 1800 tons. The. Glendale left: with a
large number of passengers, and . received
200 tons of ore at Corendolent. The Anne
nia also departed. • The -Commonwealth
will have her new set of boilers put in, and
be fixeil up generally for the season's work
in the New Orleans trade. Total rise, eight

arrived from Pittsburgh yesterday, and
