within our acquaintance would expect,'

bit no oenution on their part to sustain
the 'additional burden, by no means'
light, of riumerens private schools of
similar grade: -
. Then again, what have we to say uto
the want of unity In the system now in
existence in the city? As far as bond of
natty can be seen between the separate
wards, one might aa well be In one Conn.

cept that they pay their salaries from a
pontoon treasury. There are as many
school boards as there are wards, secur
ing at least a multllide of counsellors;
and there is no city Superintendent. In
both these respects we are distinguished
from other cities. Indeed it seems hope
less to expect to achieve any of the ben
efits of a unified system as long as these
canes of a separation almost inimical
are allowed to remain. The experiment
'which we are now making has frequent
ly bean made before, and In every cue
the result has proved unfortunate; and
we do not need to go on and find out by
our own experience, the inutility of our

Another exhibition of these evil effects
is presented in connection with the High
Schoel;whlch, by its title end by the
design of its founders, thould be the
itemised bead of the schools; but which
Ia carped at by some who are most active
in their endeavors to restrict its inila
mice and prevent Its success. It has no
imitable building, and, while thronged
with pupils I spite of the disadvantages
which it is compelled to labor under,
proving its need if net its internal ex
cellence, forced to, suffer for want of
room. This, too, when it is a fad ac.
knowledgad by the best educators of the
cenntry, that a High School inanity de
termines mere, perhsitt, than any other
agency the general kharacter of the
whole system.. ,
We have two ingestions to make to
view of the reorgsaicaticot of the schools
which the consolidation of the city has
rendered necessary. The first is, that
in the selection elmembers of the School
Boards by the new wards, great care be
taken to secure the services of the best
men that can be found; the second, that
the several' Beards unite in actin and '
cordial endeavors to improve the insti
tutions under their charge, until Pitts
burgh shall take that rank in education
and the culture which it brings, which
she airesay holds in wealth and Wins
try.

About daybreak: yesterdaylmorning, on

some thirty-six miles abcrre Tiinsas, a
portion of the train was thrown frem the
track, resulting in the death of one man,
Mr. Willis Burroughs, a driver of the
band carriage, and the wounding, more
or less seerely, of half a. dozen others.
Mr. Burroughs was from °warmsllle,
Kentucky.
The accident was mused by the break
ing of a rail.. The engine, tender, and
three first cars passed safely over, but
the two next, truck cars, contairffng four
tigress, the h
carrel, in which were the royal Bengalyena, two bears, and the
tapir, were thrown off the cages amsah
ed and the animals released., Two other '

and potties "shared the misfortune, the

fired from the 6-inch gun, with 20 lba. of
powder, at the 5-inch plate. The plate
