I=l • Jacob Meisel, of Lawreniumille, was placed on trial on an Indictment (undot the 69th section of the penal code) charg ing him with 'selling and exposing for sale diseased .theat. This is one of the cases originating at the June term, when the grand Jury made a special pre sentment piling the attention of the Court to the agitation preValling in the community concerning the, alleged sale by butchers of the 'flesh of diseased and crippled .s. animals purchased at the stock An investigation was entered into, and the grand Jury returned bills of indictment against such butchers as it appeared had offended in the manner stated. Iffr. , ,Meisel was defended by Thomas li. Hamilton, Esq., and Dis trict Attorney Duff represented the Com monwealth. A number of witnesses were examined —persons who had-seen dent buying and butchering animals—but no evidence was elicited to substantiate the charge, andlhe witnesses might as readily have been called for the. defense. The testi mony, without anyexoeption, was of an entirely negative character. The Dstrict Attorney having call all the w i tnesses subptenaed, the mum ed was submitted without Si arg ument, a con victionot being insistoupon. Judge Stowe referred to the section of the code under which the indictment was drawn, stating that taking It as it road the sell ing of unsound meat for any purpose was unlawful; but although the word was not used, the Leislature ev idently intended to provide for the punishment of those who sold unsound or diseased meat for consumption as food, and the law would be so construed. The jury rendered a verdict of hot guil ty, the county to pay the costs. George Bowman of the Eighth wart. and William Tolner Emit Liberty, the former a butcher and the latter a stock dealer, also indicted for seliing.and exposing for sale flesh , of dine-eereed. 'male, were tried with a like result, no evidence being adduced to sustain the charge in any respect. Unless some good result should dow from the prose cution of thew cases, the considerable expense w 'the county being pat to e for n aught. is There are aortae dozen or more yet to disperse of, and as they will doubtless terminate *ribose above referred to, the"costs'l.cliern amount to a large awn. • Palle* Iftou.
