The following sensible remarks by one
of the leading educators of the State, we
find Ii
In the current norm
tionalidyrieufturist. Onr country read
era cannot over-estimate the importance
of the subject to cleverly handled:
The time was when it was considered
unnecessary to educate women: . Then
she wee the slave—net the COMIIIOII of
TOM Slowly has the error been die
pelted. There are those still in our
country, quite intelligent men, too, who
assert that all women need ' Is simply a
knowledge of the moat common branches
of study. But when we know that there
are. twenty-two colleges •in our land
which receive student'. of both !sexes,
affording the same advantages to both,
and - the:through the great - liberality of
Mr. Vassar, II splendid building, costing
half ajoill nn of dollars, has been erect
ed, where young ladies may enjoy the
very hest privileges under the most aile
instructors with elegant libraries, cabi
nets and works of art, we realize that a
change has taken place in the public
,mind and that woman is beginning to
enjoy the privileges so long denied her
and to which she is justly enti
tled: The happiness and. Interests
of man, as well as woman, are con
cerned In this upward movement. No
intelligent man desires to be associated
with an ignorant companion. The two
have a mutual Influence over each other,
elevating and ennobling or degrading
and debasing. Then woman has far
more to do with the formation of the
mind of the child than man. Diming all
her growth the girl is. the constant com
panion of her motherhand, this is true,
also of the boy, in all The earlier years
of h is life. .The mother molds the mind
anti forms the heart. From her the child
takes hie impressions. She imparts to it_
from her well or -111-fluelshed mind its
first food for thought and Its incentives
to action. On her the children lean, in
her they confide. And the child which
has a true, good and intelligent mother
is not ashamed to have it known that he
is influenced and controlled by her; in
deed, it is his pride.
If them statements are correct, then
to what extent should our farmers'
daughters be educated? It le not trne, as
button asserted, that their potation Is low
and they must not be educated above it,
lest they become unhappy and unfitted
for their place? By no means; no part
of this assertion is true. A farmer's life
Is suited to give wealth, health and vir
tue. It is a high and honorable calling,
of which no one' . steed he ashamed;
usually removed from the city and from
much society. It the f.rmer and his
wife have a taste for books they may ina
prove and enjoy themselves much; if
not, the mind will become weak and will
.be occupied with trifling and unimport
ant matter. The children, too, cannot
usually enjoy the.privileges afforded in
our cities. More than others are they
with and ender the Influence of the
mother. If she is,thoroughly educated,
possessing a knowledge of history, liter
stare and science, she will ever be pour
ing ' the
yr s gt i :ir n t iinds aste ar%
Im
'piling them with a love of books and
of knowledge. The more. she knows,
the more she will be respected by the
children, and the more readily will 'they
be influenced by her in all respects.
Betides no class of persons more
need the amusement and • sooth
.ing influence of books .than farm
ers' wives and daughters. All per
sons require changes, recreations and
amusements. The mind Maimed to one
mode of Parking, without' relaxation,
often loses as balance and becomes per
insaently disordered. And we have seen
it stated in the reports of superintendents
of Insane Asylums that a larger per
eentage, in proportion, of farmers' wives
become Insane than of' any other class,
and this is owing mainly to the severity
and want of variety of their mode of
life. Hence the demand for the pleasures'
end, changes which books afford, and the
atiejigth of mind which a sound educa
tion gives. We love to think of the hap
pineasmitich is enjoyed away from the
excitement and temptation of the city
by the family, after the toils of the day '
are over, gathered &mood the domestic
hearth in read - rimer study. And this is
not all theory. Names, without number,
of oar noblest women and most gifted
men migh,t, be given, who were brought.,
up on the farm, and had their minds and
hearts formed by well-educated. intelli
gent mothers. Above all things lot the
farmer /pre his, daughter a thorough
education in the higher as well as the
lower branches. To her it will be worth
more, In all respects, than the cattle, or
land, or stock he may leave. It will
give her character, position and influ
ence. It will prepare her to be 'happy,
to succeed in life, to bo useful. Educate,
educate your daughters no less than yotir
sots.

There is no way of improving soils
