Go where you will, in the "city full," and this fact is demonstrated -in every possible form. And the evil is on the increase, notwithstanding the progiessive steps of morals and religion. P.eoplC now-a -days are more rapidly ed ucated, under the sharp discipline of the age, in eviias well as well as that which is good, than in former years. ;Dyer"- thing tends: to foster the social evils of sodety, outside of the pale of Christi anity, in spite of the careful guards cm ploYed to ward off its insidious influen 'ees. The franiework of society is sadly warped by the pernicious elements So glaringly apparent. Doubtless the hab its of the people are molded to some extent by the aggregation of vices and follies incident to large bodies of people. A certain proportion of persons in every ' community live-off of others, and prey upon them, and the larger the population is the greater the accumulation of vicious and worthless persons. It would of course be a diftletat. matter to Wit= der the tide' of iniquity in a commu• 'ray by forced measures , The only proper course is , to not only diaconate rtance such "lewd persons of the baser sort," but adopt counter influences, ,which would tend. to. neutralize and dually superego their evil Ivor* .'. Very few am aware of the magnetic power we receive from our intercourse with society generally. lduch of our education is received, at least of a prac tical sort, by our 'connection with the outer world: We can scarcely estimate its power upon us for good or evil. The nntriminelled range of ,the eye as it i ll sateepstound fro, • ws things that act powerfully upbn on 's volition, unless under proper ; moral and mental disci)... liiie anclfhe rest p orama atso of living humanity in its va ens' Phases of hfe, impress the mind to fearful extent with evil results. , Under the same in nonce the extrava- , '' gthi.desire for finery awakens a spirit of rivalry and emulation, which tends to roister the spirit of prodigality of the most deplorable cast, resulting too fre quently in the relaxation of the-" graces of womanhood, modesty, truth, purity, and beauty. A ministerial body in an iltirtern city recently discussed at length " the corrupting ,Inthiences of city life. Oar of the leading ministers took the vpw that the genteel eircieswere mainly i spoosible for the moral degradation In Our sA es. These so-called genteel cir lesFve law and custom - to the comma ' r . pity. Ito argued that the corrupting /modes of fashidnable Costumes, such as , 'tilting hoops, very short. underclothm, and other. fashions , which originate in the foulest dens.of Paris, by their expo sure of the pericoWdoes more injury to morals then all the Sabbath breakers and all the bawdy houses of a city. Then the side-walks; t-oo are literally encoinbered with persons, who are an , , .worthy' of notk.-C-und Witoicol icne e fills the very atmosphere with impurity by their filthy conversation -and sensual looks. . The filthy :sheets that are pia . carded on theoOu witlx cuts . • illustrating low scenes of fOtz. life and crime; cannot help having &power ful influence upon the young especially. many a purv-minded person has been - roorally , taini ed 'with the indulgence of the sense lingight in their -ordinary every '414 mingl With the multitudes on the . • streets. • The • seine great truth is also tieTeloyed by the sense of hearing. in . . . titesil of this Drava ,being wholly the medium of alt that is elevating, chno -laling, and pleasant in sound, too fre quently it is the channel through which, lu filling the common duties of life, the " contaminating immoralities of the day ] force themselves, so that;like the eye, we are receiving an education undesired and unsought, which is pernicious to the highest degree. It may be truly said that it is much I easier to point out the evils of s ociety than to suggest suitable remedies for their removal. Some attempt, however, should be'made for their extirpation, or we shall finally drift into a condition of things that will eventually destroy the better elements of society. The pul pit, legislative bodies, educational in family circle, and press, have their part to perform in this great refor mation. Many things that are lightly viewed now, must hereafter be brought under the strictest surveillance. Here tofore there has been a disposition to avoid responsibility and place it upon others. It is lamentable to state that the loose ways of society, even of the most criminal character, are regarded simply as "breaches of etiquette," "good breeding," "foibles of youth," and "fast ways," Instead of taking the stand point, that many of these "foolish weak. nesses"not only do personal injury, out rage the rules of correct ;deportment, but, that God" has expressly declared that those who are guilty of such things "rdall-not-enter heaven." The insult to the Great Ruler is usually overlooked in 'the peccadilloes of depraved ones. Plainly as the Gospel may be preached in many of our pulpits, there is, we fear. too much of a disposition to round off the sharp denunciations of the 'Word of nod, and present the truth in a negative form, instestrof the decided, unequivocal words the message,of God is recorded In. Many who are known to have "weak neases," of a very serious kind, are al lowed to rest easily in conscience in their cushioned pews, who, ifthey were dealt'et with by ministers as the prophet f could' truthfully say to them, "Thou art the man-" 'The time has come when the pulpit should thunder out the anath emas of God against the pernicious evils of society, whether they relate to liqnnr tippling; gaming for sport or money, foal talking, nudity of person, sensuality in high or low life, in, public or in private. There should be no mawkishness' upon the part of the faithful minister by primp wording to avoid offence, but rather there should be plainness of speech, so that the old and young of both sexes should clearly understand the message and appropriate their share whiCh rightly belongs to them. Courts are frequently charged with en couraging a - species of immorality by their interpretation of law, when the fault lies more directly at the door of the framers of law. In order to reach this evil men of integrity, pure morals, correct habits, should be entrusted with the functions of legislators. -3lany of the public evils of society are traceable to this point. There is, howevei, a -dispo sition too frequently, by legislative bodies, and in their-tunt the exponents of law, to 'give , ' a too liberal range of de cision. While the great principles of law are founded on the Bible yet the con demnation of that book in many things is overlooked, and hence the laxity of society is greatly augmented. Take the matter of divorce for instance. If the strict rule of the Bible was kept ill view, by legislators and Courts, there would be fewer divorces granted. The law authorities fail to remember that the severances of these relations in most in stances are the foundation of evils, to the persons involved, and children and relations, which often run through every ramification of their lives, and give color to their destiny in time, and per haps in eternity. The conductors of educational institu tions while inculcating the local princi ples of 'learning and culture, have it in their power to . give proper bent to the minds of the youth under their charge in all matters pertaining to society, which can never be so well performed again. There should be a careful train ing of youth in every relation bearing upon their connection with ciety, so that every pupil would be fore s a o rmed for threading life's difficult pathway. The reason why many have been e ntrap! pad into sensuality, is because the moral wrong to themselves and,to God, as well as to society, was ndglecteil. Knowledge of the most defeat° charac ter may be imparted without engender leg improper results. So in, the family circle. Parents often reap the bitter fruits of over delicacy towards their 1 children, by ,leaving them to acquire certainkinds of_knowledge by the hap I hazard of new associations, and in num berless" cases these ignorant ones, are left to the mercy of a merci less world. Better far, to educate the young in every duty of life, tatting care to point out the - important i features, and much of future evil will ho , avoided. To the press is committed the 'great work of educating the masses. Though the pulpit range may be limited, and all ', the other means suggested are inade (Mate Ito the task, yet the press can wield om nipotent power over all classes of socie ty. It can, and should expose the social evils of society in language that will do much towards curing the lepro sy that fills the land. Vice and immor ality of every form should be exposed in unmeasured terms. The press is more than] ever the ally of the pulpit and the grand agencies of li e ligioui and benevolent operations of age. Tana.% uuI t ED PERSON Bof the Nash ville Penitentiary made a daring attempt to gain their liberty one day last week. I.\lE AND DIVORCE I re ssug. e EDlTons. Tivotelnee c 1' the ritiWith youre, nir;l., kind 11 • 'IHURST 111likET 11111 S ll z - permission I would make some remarks, • suggested by your article on Marriage I . and Divorce, in the paper of Saturday last. it must be obvious to all observers that NAY AND JULY COUPONS, a correct public sentiment requires rather be strengthened than weakened on this most ituportant subject: a mutter 'tying, as it does, at the foundation of •Aoeiety, both religious and civil. • You say "the Protestant Claurches all declare marriage to be a civil contract." I was not aware that this Is true ; just in these words. I believe that some Pm testants hold that it is more than , a civil contract; that while the State recognizes and treats it as such, there are persons and churches Itho regard it as having n higher origin, a more sacred sanction. If it be but a civil contract, then the obligation to perform relative duties, can have no higher binding force. I suppose it is, therefore,' we see that wl',eu one party falls or ceases to perform or fulfill the obligation, the other is declared to be released. This is, certainly, the most 1 , plain and simple doctrine of divorce, and is probably not exceeded by the laws of Indiana; and what must greatly facilitate the obtaining of divorces is the fact that civil duties are but few and not always understood, if indeed they are particularly dittoed at all; and if not particularly defined, parties cart readily come to quarrel about them; a quarrel soon lead, to charging the failure to per form.. Thus it can be seen that the State and the courts can have their business greatly increased. To what must this doctrine leadt to whathasit already led! Young people hastily enter into this contract, find it not what they expected, and being un der uo obliion higher than civil con tract," too readily.mak light " of it; and take measures to dissolve it. I think it will hardly begainsayed, that were there not a public opinion on this subject of g-eater force than this doctrine of the "civil contract," the state of society , would soon become frightful to all good people. For ahat it is al ieady, see the number of divorce cases entered in onr courts in the last few months. . Bat can it, be true that marriage is only a civil contract? Marrtage was in stituted when man. was made male mud female, and involves much more than the mere coming together for procrea tion. A true marriage involves a Union of minds and hearts. The man:-bnd the woman ime, separately, each incom plete in mind, and incaoable of the full est uses of their respective faculties; can no mote attain to their highest capabili ties without a true union of minds, than they could fulfill the highest use of ti.is life, that of propagating and training 'the race, without a conjunction of bodies. Hence, it is a great truth that God made them at the beginning, one. And his law is a higher sanction than a civil contract, and must have the perpetuity of the human race. But not to pursue this subject, bow plain it is to see, that if we place mar riage anhe Sabbath under the doctrine of mere d civil t contract, what shall pre vent a whirlwind of popular frenzy from abolishing both?
