DIARRIAGE AND DIVORCE.
.Easvnral Protestant clergymen have
petitioned . the . Connecticut Legislature
to adopt some more stringent laws to
'prevent divorces. They base their ap
plication onthe 'doctrine that "marriage
is a divine institution, and that ita laws
and the laws of divorce`are ordained of
God and are not left to human regale
tion Precisely what these gentlemen
mean by the . phraseology they use, is
• not

the kips of power. Marriage became a
sacrament, solemnizable only by the

the Quakers the Marriage ceremony is
performert :by the contracting - parties,
and consists, in its essence, in the avowal,"
before witnesses, of •a purpose ( to live
together as man and wife.' "Marriage Is

parstivelrfew virould think themselves
more than half married unless the cere•
mony was performed by a clergyman
and they received a ghostly benediction.
This is a striking illustrationot the man•
ner in which an usage oriel survives the
ideas and sentiments in which it origina
ted.
. The Catholic assumption is that di
vorce is allowable only on the ground of
adultery. These Connecticut Protes
tants seem to incline to the same con
clusion. In all the Stares of the Ameri
can Union, except. South Carolina, a
different rule has been adopted, with the
general concurrence of christlan people.
In this, Joust MiLTON scents to have
been'a more potent anthority than Popes
and COuncils. his exhaustive treatise
"Oa the Doctrine and Discipline of Di
vorce," though no immediate fruit fol.
lowea its publication, is manifestly des-':
thud to revolutionize the legislation of
christendom on this topic.
Still,'it cannot be denied that the ease
with which divorce Is obtained in some
of the States, exerts a most demoralizing
tendency. lint the mischief bar not its
origin exclusively In the facility for sep
aration. People marry in this country,
in numerous instances, with less fore
thought than sensible people trade
horses. It is nut wonderful, consequent
ly, they find tlieruselves - uicongenbilly
mated, and take the readiest means for
extrication from the miserable dilemma
in which they find themselves. Nor is
this all. Most women marry, not from
love, but for a'settlement. Men, in the
exercise of arbitrary poWer, deny wo.'
men education fitting them for business ,
pursuits, and hedge their way about .so
that no sphere of independent usefulness
and honorable 'ambition is open to them.
Position, maintenance, comfort—every
desirable and possible attainment almost
—is made to depend on marriage.
, No
wonder, therefore, women are led to it,
frequently, not so much from affection
as from policy: When men learn to be
just towortla women the permanent re
lations of the sexes will be improved.
ANOTHER IN VE*.STIG tTION
The recent pardon of Hr. Kenn
er must, of Now York, who was con
victed and sent to the penitentiary for
numerous and vast frauds upon the na
tional treasury, naturally — excited con
siderable comment. In justification of
this act of clemency it- was alleged by
his friends and those' of the President,
that he made restitution of moneys
wrongfully obtained. This statement
was so vague as to suggest the inference,
that if he had refunded at all be had
only made good what he fraudulently
obtained in the transaction of which he
was convicted, and not in the thirty or
forty other transactions relative to which
bills of indictment were found, but not
yet tried. In view of these other charges
against him; he was careful, as soon as
discharged from prison, to embark for
Europe.
It now appears that the pardon was not
obtained upon his penitence and restitu
tion, but by enlisting in his behalf a
number of prominent lobbylsta and par
don brokers, male and female, who re
ceived such portions •of the convict's
money as satisfied their eshorbitant de
mends. How these creatures managed
to influence the President each citizen
will conjecture accenting to the Warta he
entertains o that funet!onary's char
acter. ' -
There is 1 , atronz probability, how
ever, that a ~C ongressional Committee
will take this "case in - baud, and lay all
the facts relative to it bare before the
public.

How to TAIT MEAT.—Dr. Lethoby
gives the following description of good
and bad meats, with which his duties as
sanitary otlicer in the citY• of London
have required him to be very familiar:
flood mesa is neither of a pale pinkish

whereas that of diseased meat is soft and
watery. The feel of healthy meat is
somewhat elastic, and hardly moistens
the finger. Diseased meat Is soft and
wet. Good meat has little odor and this
is not disagreeable, t Whereas 'diseased
meat stitelln faint and cadaverous. Good
meat barns cooking without much shrink
ing or foxing much of its weight; but bad
meat shrivels up and bolls to piers's, this
is duo to the larger proportion of watery
and gelatinous material, and the absence
of fat and true muscular sulattance in the
meat. Under the. microscope the fibre
should be clear and well defined, and
free from infusorial animalcule"; while
that' of diseased meat is sodden and

the transverse streaks are indistinct and
wide apart, and animalcules abound
in it.
YDROPIIOIIIA.—Mr. Foster endeavors
to throw some light upon the question of
the length of time between the blte and
the appearance of hydrophobia. Ile
thinks that we may draw some such
conclusions as the following:
I. That when a bite . has occurred on

that if those few weeks pass over safely,
