BRITISH NORTH AMEBIC\
- 'The British people have evinced In
aptness for colonizing unequalled in
'modern times. They have not only
planted new possessions and maintained
_them, but have seized old and populous
countries, and held - on to them in spite
of all opposition front within or without.
These outlying dominions were so nu

Directly, this system costs more than

Then it remains to be determined
whether the indirect protits are sunlcient
to justify these expenditures. Undyr

NEW JERSFa has authorized a Com._

Ml:it action is needfnVon the part of
Pennsylvania and New York to carry
out this enterprise, we are not informed.

solid purpose to accomplish the eutla . -
prise. It is questionable Whether,.;ffor
purposes of navigation, a considerable
rdvenne could be derived. Busines s through all the upper Delaware resion
centres at New York. Two canals and
a number of railroads Crossing the river,
lead thither. Much lumber still follows
the natural outlet to Philadelphia. In a
few years more the _forests will be ex

So long as it continues the lumbermen
will object .to the erection of dams.
But the witer-power thus created

As the average condensation of gas in

the proposed scheme is practicable, why
not take these millions of dollars worth
of gas, which now only annoy, and
