' CONCEALING EGA MUTE Or A CHILD.
Rachel. Small, olio. llnnnewell, Was placed
on trial on an Indictment chargmglierwith
concealing the birth of an illegitimate male
child. The readers of the War:m . ls will re
member the particulars of the ending, on
the 6th of February last, of a fully develop
ed Infant, In the Presbyterian burying
ground, in Collins township, concealed be
hind a tombstone. Circumstances pointing
to the accused an the mother of the child,
she was arrested two or three days atter in
Allegheny City. tieing known to have been
in a condition to become a mother, and
having resided in the neighborhood of the
graveyard, caused her to be auspucted, and
subsequent developMents, together with
her confession, lef no doubt as to fa
that she was the mother of the child.th o
ilerct
confession was in substance that her mother,
with whom she resided, objecting to her re
wattling longer. she concluded to souk tol
-1 mitten.) to au hospital, aml having left the
house with such purpose, was taken lli
near the cemetery, where the child was
born-dead.
The fact appeared that the accused mai a
widow, but there was no proems to the time
of Ate death of her husband, hence Mr.
IS wart zwelder, for the deferme, clalmed there
was no clear and thstlnct proof that the
cum' wan a bastard. Again, It appeared by
the confession made that the child was born
dead, and that the concealment of the birth
was alone from fear of the mother of the ne-
ed. The Court charged, that the jury
at believe that It the child had lived it
would have been a bastard before . they con
vict. Trio jury after brief deliberation re
turned a verdict of "not guilty." The ac
cused was discharged by proclamation.
ON MS SECOND TRIAL
J. If. Dawson was placed on his second
trial (the jury falling to agree on the first)
for fraudulently making and uttering a
draft, with Intent to defraud J. K. Colwell,
in this city, in Noyecuber last. On trial at

Difficulty about a Foe
Robert Miley, while attending a sale of
berms on Irwin street ityesterday, be
came engaged in. a dispute with another
Man, which resulted in Utley being knock
ed down. Determined on gaining redress
through the medium of a suit for assault
and battery, he repaired to the orlice of An
toine Weidman, Esq., for the purpose of
procuring that gentleman's services as
counsel. After he had told his story, Mr.
Weidman advised him to prosecute, stating
hat be would attend to the' case for the
pittance of SID. To this arrangement Riley
assented, and the attorney proceeded to act
for him. When the information had been
made, the legal gentleman demanded but
fee, bat was coolly informed by his client
that ha would not give him a cent, and he
could make the best out of his bargain. of
coarse the lawyer was enraged, and while
his b was at fever beat, he appear be
fore Alood
lderman Donaldson an ed d
made oath,
charging Utley with false pretence. The
latter was apprehended and brought before
the magistrate to whom ho acknowledged
hlairiitts eapteselag a desire to have the
affair amicably adlosted. This was a very
easy matter, as Wiedman withdrew the
suit on the receipt of a SID greenback.
When Miley attempts to be sharp again he
will doubtless select a victim riot conver
sant with the law, (I) and avoid being
brought before a magistrate entertaining
the same notions as to what constitutes
"false pretence."
