Dr. Joseph A. Reed, Superintendent of
'hall:mane Department, in his report, pre
sents varions suggestions with a view to
the further improvement of the usefulness
of the institution, During the year the in
stitution has been drawled to excess, and it
has been with great dubithlty the; patients
who arrived could be furnished with com
fortable quarter.; to this may be attributed
the fact that a larger number of patients
have died than In any previous year.
Another year will bring partial relief by
the completion of the western exten
sion of the hospital.• Dr. Reed ur
gently recommends that separate pro
vision be made for the criminal infiane.
Among . the patients aro persons of good
family, members of the learned professions,
artists, merchants, artisans, who feel it an
extreme hardship to be compelled to atm.
elate ttidt criminals, whose Insanity has only
served to darken and eraitannao the most
revolting features of their characters. The
moral effect on the minds of those patients.
who are capable of reflection, and have
never been convicted of crime, is extreme
ly bad. They do not hesitate to ask "why
convicts are brought from prison to easool•
ate with themr , The managers, In their
report to the Legislature, recommend a
State Hospital for incurables, in which, un
der separatertrestment, might be kept the
criminal humus.
