The Armstro rig Reintbikan of the 30th nit: contains the following: • .."Sonio Years ago a survey was made ' from Kittanning to Brookville, along the Bownnahannock Valley, which was then considered the best route for the extension of the• Allegheny Valley Rail road. It was -cheaper than any then known, and could have been built for over half a million of dollars less than by.the Red Bankrouta "Since that time the proposed exten sion by way of Brookville was abandon ed, and that to, 011 City along tba verge of the Allegheny river adopted, and now the road to its final destination last nam ' ed is being rapidly completed, and with in another year may be in active_opers tion. "And whiletti'e new route of the Al legheny Valley Railroad is reaching its oimplation, the question of alsobuildling a road on the old route to Brookville, and thence to North Point on the-Phil adelphia and Erie Railroad, so as to form - a complete new line to' New York and Philadelphia from Pittsburgh and Kit %leaning, has been revived. It ii now propelled to build this extension along the Orminslumnock - "Valley, beginning at either Kittanning or Monticello, pro vided all the owners of real estate: tbe contemplated lie will come forward and 'guarantee, unconditionally, the light of..way to. the railroad company, entirely' frninf-all pecuniary considers lions." Our contemporary does not state by what existing roads, after leaving the Philadelphia and Erie, it is in, contem plation to reach New York. Some -months ago our attention was called to this matter of a 'tidal and independent route, by a gentleman _thoroughly famil iar with the midland rezions of this Commonwealth, and with the existing ..railroad facilities through the northeast ' ern Counties.- He was decidedly of the opinion that -no proper arrangement. could be made for using any portion of the philadelphia and Erie railroad, for routine which arc menifest to almost ev erybody, and that it would be essential *to make a, new road, some seventy or eighty miles is length, bywhich to reach Northumberland, at the forks of the Stusquelienna river, from which point railroads have been In profitable opera tion for many_years, all the way to New York. • These railroads are the Blooms . berg Mad larlurwartzta, which extends up the .2torth Branch of the Busquelan na to Pittston, and thence up the Luke yanna to Scranton. Prom Scranton the Debiware, Lacketianna and West ern ' Railroad runs till it inter sects the Central - Railroad o f New Jersey, near Easton. This latter road formerly bad its eastern ter. minus at Elizabeth, on. Newark Baal but has within -two or three years been extended to•Jorsey City, opposite New ,Yorie. -TheDelaware, Lackawanna and Western is a broad gunge road. If It should tie tufa as part;of a new trunk line, it third rail would be necessary from 13cranton down to Jenctitin. Fhe Central - Railroad of New Jersey is of narrow gunge, but &third rail was laid upon it quite a number of years ago to facilitate the immense coal traffic cominn out of Luzern county. Another route, but we think not so , feasible' a one, is that projected by Sir Idcatrox Priv, when he was casting about for new projects upon 'Which to raise money enough to avoid bankrupt. cy.. •He-proposed to diverge from the ,Philadelphia and .Erie near Northumber • land, by taking the Catawiesa Railroad, Ithickrould lead him from the Basque- Lanni :lalain.,Oierbito the Wiley of the Lehigh. Chunk, his design was to strike what is commonly known as the Allentown route, at Bethlehem, come 'sixteen miles from the confluence of the Lehigh with the Delaware. From thence, his plan was to cross New Jersey by one of the existing routes. Of these two schemes, we apprehend the former offers the largest induce ments. =9 Since the suppression of the Southern rebellion this country has been flooded with light, trashy literature. Besides the large field occupied by weekly literary Papers and serial numbers of the numer ous family of magazines, the press also is constantly throwing off this kind of reading matter by the thousands, in pam phlet iOllll, the ten-cent , fancy-cover "blood arid murder'? stuff, to the higher priced and better class of novels. It is to be muckyegretted that this low grade literature finds such an extensive talc, and.that die mania for this kind of read ing is encouraged by publishers, who have thereby assumed a responsibility of a grave character, and one, too, that is bearing fruit that is steadily under mining the morals of the rising genera tion. Concert of action by publishers would not only strangle that kind of sensation al, low grade writers, but change the morbid taste of the public for such.read ing matter. As the tone of literature is elevated, so will the tastes of the people be raised to a higher standard of excel lence. Publishers and writers bad much to do withthe wonderful change attained over the current literature of the last century in the old world. 'Sven liathe present day there le a license taken by writers in Scope, and countenanced by publishers and people, that dare not be I assumed in this country without incur ring the maledictions of the reading pub lic. Bid as the tastes of the people are In this country, it ranges high above Many others. But there is room for im provement. It is but just to recognize the noble Stand of a few of the leading publishers, such as the Harpers, Apple tons, Dodd, eta, in maintaining the standard of literature at a point of excel. team that some have forfeited by pan dering tt*he vitiated and demoralized. It is refreshing to meet with publica tions of a substantial character, tending to elevate and interest the mind andawa• ken pare thoughts. Such publications are calculated to counteract the perni cious influences of the miserable trash which circulates so largely. The Han pans have just brought out a work of much merit, and one, too, which will doubtless find a ready sale. It is enti tled "Annals of a Quiet Neighborhood," a work of 881 pages, tastily bound in muslin. It Liens of those kinds of works which tends to cultivate the better ele ments of our nature, "and at the same time there is a .oharming style in the narrative, which carries the reader along with such ease and comfort, that is so oft an the case in the realm of fiction. These attractive papers originally appeared in the Sunday Magazine, edited by the cel ebrated Dr. GuTriatir, at least Most of them, end they were received with great favor by the numerous readers of that popular and _well conducted magazine. The H.Linsna have done a good work in reproducing them in boOk form, as they belong to a department of literature of which we cannot have too much. The public need a healthier style of lit erature, and such works will greatly help to give it tone and character. The author, Gitorthilfacroasio, M. A. gives its ideal of a clergyman of the Church of England, though the typd is one In charge of a rustic English parish. Ice some portions of the work there Is a stiffness in the style, but generally the characters drawn are represented with care and gracefulness. Mr. Itlannonaan shows a strong feeling for the beautiful in nature, as a writer remarks, a poet's appreciation of those subtle influences whicliamse her varying moods to be re flected in our souls as in her skies. Un like the exciting novel, whenit is finished and thrown aside, this book we may turn to as to a friend, and And consola tion and sympathy. This great publishing house have also just issued "American Leaves," one of the most readable books which has ap peared for some time. The book is got ten up in elegant style, and contains nearly four hundred pages. The author is Dr. Samuel Osgood, a distinguished New York divine, who prepared the ar ticles originally with one exception, for Harper's Magazine. They are fifteen in number, and differ widely in style and topic, yet they agree in treating a series of topics of interest to every think ing American—topics such as "School Influences," "American Boys," "Ad ler lainGirls," "Art Among the People," etc. The Doctor places some serious and important truths befoie the Ameri can mind in the easy and graceful dic tion which characterises his writings: The only objection that an orthodox mind might raise would be an scot. atonal plea . for "liberal Christianity." The Doctor thinks, in his way, on "American Girls," that woman in this country has a peculiar delicacy of physi cal constitution that makea her especially sensitive to external influences. Wheth er it is the climate, or our way of liv ing, or whatever may be the cause, - the fact is certain that the American girl is a very delicate plant; beautiful indeed, in comparison with others, yet not gen erally strong in nerve and muscle, and too ready to fide before her tine mid trammed- has-come. Marriages, as early as the laws of health and the dictates of prudence allow, are advised, because young people are saved from many evils by identifying their whole destiny with each other, and the wife's affections and the husband's purity ere_ then in the best possible keeping, under Cod's law and Christ's grace. These brief words will give some Idea • of the line of thought in the essay stated. The nit. morons readers of. Harper's Magazine, as well as others who have only read an occasional angle, will be pleased to have the whole aerie's so beautifully bound in book form for their libraries. Magazine literature has steadily risen withinnless than a score of years. How ever, side by side with those of merit, there are some monthlies struggling for the victory, which it would be far better should fail to receive an adequate eV' port. This style of raiding, in connection with the daily and wee kl y newspapers, fermi; a large part in the family circle a nd by the traveller. Seventeen "years ago the Santana commented their monthly, and magazine literature soon entered a new era. The vast resources of that mammoth establishment were brought into requisition to furnish a monthly composed of the best materials to be obtained, of pen and pencil, to make it readable for all dudes, from the scholar down to thi lowest type of mind. It steadily grew in favor from the out set, so that it enters the year 1887 with FZZ ME a circulation of one hundred and twelve , thousand copies. Praiseworthy as it may be to them for their tact. in brir in , ple, yet, the mpounblitiacaytiiownslfbeimoorreitatlitehepspe opn. larity it has attained. Novels are looked upon. by .. some pen. pie with great suspicion. Tb ere seems to he a terror to them Lathe. very name. All novels, however, are. not alike; some are bad enough to be sure; bs t there are works of this kind which any person rimy read with pleasure and profit. Such novels as "Felix Holt, the Radi cal," and "Aflame Bede," lay George El liot; "John Halifax," and. "The Two Marriages," by Miss Moloch (Mrs. Craik), are delightful werivings of fic tion. These novels are ((ward in the li brary of "Harpers Select Novels." Re cently these publishers have issued the following novels in paper covers: "Cra dock Nowell, a Tale of the New Forest," by Richard Doddridge Blackmore, thor of "Clara Vaughan:" "Bernthal; ppr the Bon's Revenge," from the German of L. Muhlbace ; "Rachel's Secret," by the author of the "Master of Marton." Ix our remarks yesterday under the head of "Dangerous Legislation," we did not, of course, intend any censure of our worthy representative Mr. licEsts.i It was his duty doubtless to present the' petition and, probably as advised, to re port and advocate the bill. We feel' ans when 'he thoroughly investigates and understands the evil tendencies of the bill as reported, he will be as . rcady as we are to oppose its passage. Blame can attach to hint only In default of this. ON the first of March, Charles A. Da na's new paper, the New York gfrpubii can, will make its first appearance. It will be intensely radical in tone, advo cating all the extreme measures of the party, favoring the immediate impeach ; meat of the President, universal suffrage and the utter disfranchisement of rebels.
