Llnersl netball tO Newsboys and Annuls EL&TURDA ~ JANUARY 5, 1847. THE U,;y. SENAToIt!UHP. .. In the. organl„ation of the House of Rep. resentatises allcthe elements of opposition to Gore! nor CT: , 1 / 4 - ix United in Burnell of 3fr. Gx.sss for S/Ceaire,r. Independently of the sigehicanee / elf thinvote as touching the &nat. rial qui silien, it was a well-earned tribute to an eAellent gentleinart and an inteltisgent - and [efficient legislator. This vole disclosed t 'fact that the supporters of Governor Cuterrn Were in the minority, but it did not bow that the friends of Gen. end Castrato!: were in the majority.. Not a few.eiperien d politicians inferred from it that neithe:l ',usenet, nor-CUmlft?r could ' be chosen, anc;_,That ultimately the contest would settle 40fii , li between Sees-Ens and Gnow. r 4, ~ As soon,*hoWever, as the• Houses were organized the qUestion was raised whether by the law of (*puss, enacted at the last session, the cleoor for Senator shonld be xid held on the s,co ' or third Tuesday of the innath. Tioi ink Airy was certainly peril; nest enough; bu a wag, familiar with all the ways of Harrisburg, on reading the re port of the proceedings, remarked, with a malicious .twinkle in his eyes, that he judged the Rouses had been. "set up," and it was thought to be an expensive luxury to keep them over another week. That was an uncharitable inference, not borne out by any known facts, and we admonish our leaders not to take At for gospel, unless they, have a mind to. • This was followed by rumors that either CAUERON or CURTGII, or both, would be withdrawn, and STeVF.NS and Gnow be brought forward as the: real and ultimate contestants. For Mr. SrEvaNa's ability, integrity and services we havo the very highest respect. No man in the great na tional controversy now drawing to u set tlement, has done more or better than be. But age- and .infirmities are against him. Possibly he might live oat a Senatorial term, but such a result is not probable. • Gnow, on the other hand, is in the full . vigor of manhood. tits natural powers aro much above the average of Statesmen; he has been long in public life, and has ac quired a vast amount •of knowledge spec , tally fitting him for duty in the Senate. _From the day of his entrance into the body, be would be' at hoine, and exert a powerful influence. Ile is, moreover, e trne man. No body has ever had occasion to doubt or question where . he stood on any pubic question. There is' no more reliehle man in the nation. We - say, therefore, if CasturtoN and Connie shall he put aside, let a rally he made forGnow. But we are free to say we think either CAMERON or CURTIN will be the Senator Both are tenacious, and neither will give way until forced out of the field. What their rs , Qpsctive friends may do in extrem ity we shall not venture to predict; but we do not as yet anticipate the extremity pony imagine they ECC in prospect. rur POPE'S tonuow The address of the Pone to the officers of the French army on their retirement from Rome was 'freighted Aith a sadnpsa too profound to be fathomed by persons who do not entertain the ideas and senti ments in which it had its , origin. Look ing at his situation from the Protestant • standpoint, we see in•!•:!t nothing alas ming. Neither his venerable person nor spiritual office is menaced • with violence. His temporal kingstip, at most bet an accident or Incident in his relations to the Chris tian world, is thereatened with subversion. But this kingship was -never so puissant as to secure hts Indepaidence. The terri tory and rxmulatitut over which he reigns has always been so limited .as to give him the namerather than the potentiality of a monarch. He has been constantly depend ent on the great Catholic powers to pro-- .tect his authority from invasiort from with out or from revolt from within. Nor is his cage any better in this particular at the present moment. He dismally avows his fears of a revolutionary movement -that would reduce him to the Beret; straits. From whom does he apprehend this move • merit? Neither from the. followers of Alabama, nor from Protestants, nor from Infidels; but from members of his own communion—from men who recognizd his spiritual ofilep and authority, and profess willingness to submit thereto. • Why are the French forces withdrawn? Not because France has recanted ance to the Pope, by ceasing to be Catho lic. At no former period have the French people manifested less dispositarkto break with those traditions deemed essential to maintain the unity of 'the Church. Why Is not the French Army of Occupation, now retiring, replaced by another from Spain, Portugal, or Austria? It must be admitted that two of those powers aro not as formidable, either absolutely or Com paratively, as they formerly were. But, In itself, that fact would furnish a reason why the French troops should' , remain, • rather than sufficient explanation why Spain either alone, or. conjointly with Por tugal and Austria, does no; Make provis ion for garrisoning Rome. 'fact - is, that a feeling pervades all Catholic coun tries—at least the more intelligent classes . of those countries—that the : temporal pow er, whateCcr may have Lain its uses in past ages, had ceased to_bei necessary or desirable. Th.:3 sentiment its almost mil . Tarsal in Il y. With no tdispositlon •to • challenge and impede the spiritual func tions of the Pope, almost all Italians are overmantered by a longing for national unity. For h. they have' ihcarred great . sacrifiera.and Manlayed the. Most-magnifi cent heroism. Atte, many jeers - of effort they sea the grand conlemmation just be fore them, and are ready to grlisp It. The day the flag of Italy abfould wave —over Rome, and VICT.It EIIALA I S 6 XI., should declare it to be his capital, the Il i lio n peo- V Pie would bo more preform:lll, esthetic than they are to-day, provided only the PoYe should consent to yield his politich position and accept their, spiritual homage alone. Birefusing to meet the. demands 'of the country and age ,in this particular, be runs the risk of ultimately alienating the Italians from the Church, and so, great ly weakens his spiritual authority and fol lowing. This, we think, is the view he will yet take of the nutter, and hence at tactito consequence to the rumors that he is likely to go to-Malta or Jerusalem, or to come to the United States. Rome Is the true seat of hie power. Elsewhere he would be something Jeu this he is .there, and something less th an is essential to his ia t adahtn . rhe as , holic world. commizisti pAismusi:l. 4 —....:ito r a ra ttb re e i r eigtt4 Some time ago the people of the 'United •to Paris eerie g. n ! the 'irve'cwr'sir6tx t.,i'i,r-",;- Stateli were informed of the sailing, from ne tt .tiati.tsamarn spok.-n of con6stuig ale hun d re d e nd fifty-aevert. tor . tnr n p; - t One of the ports in Maine, of a colony, ntatloo Il t. e heetT:ct men, women and children, fur... Some or their mitt. points of belief ire that they are of the Tribe'of Ephraim; that the •curse" hes beediaken off friiln the land of Judea; and that the set time has arrived for them to reclaim the inhentance., This is whatthey have started for. 'They are organized, civ illy Mid ecclesiastically, and maintain that they are surely to be follovred_by large numbers of the same faith. Landing in Palestine at the coming on of warm weather,. and Without proper med ical attendance, the mortality among this company hag. been very large. Dissatis factions have sprung up. _ Probably they have not found the land itself as desirable, as seen through centuries of sacred story, it appeared to their imaginations. Very .likely they have become disgusted with the "heathen" whom they dad In passession. 'But this mach is certain, their ship has left ':r em; and they are in fora hard tussle with Fortune. There is ,a bare"-possibility of success; but the chances are many hunaed to one that the adventure, conceived In re ligious ferver, will - end in disappointment and disaster. • " COLORADO AND NEBRASKA, The Colorado bill passed at the last ses sion, and was .vetoed. It has not been called up this session. It is probable the Nebraska bill, after a considerable amount more of talk, will be Passed, and likewise encounter .a veto. • The prospect now is that neither of hose bills caxi becarried in to laws over vetoes. • Seven . nr eight Re publican Senators, - including Si"msnu. and FIESSENDY.K, will not vote for them. Mr. SUMNER declares he will vote for no bill that makes a distinction between whites and blacks as to political. rights. Mr. Fessannes is opposed to making small States. Other republican Senators have their peculiar objections. If the Southern States shall continue to refuse approval of the ConstitutiOnal Amendment, and if no more Territoriqs hall be elected into States, three.quarters of all the States cannot be secured for 60 Amendment. Ratification by all the loyal States cant be obtained, but as the Supreme Court is ruling on cognate questions, it is probable a ratification by three-quarters of the Ststes actually participating in the government would not_be held valid. It seems plain, therefore, that the Southern States must remain in their present anomalous condition, or he reduced to the status of Territories. If cut down. to Territories it is possible a conflict o opinion might arise between the Judiciary and Congress. The Courb• might hold such cutting down to be illegal., while Congress would maintain Its position be• ing a law unto itself. • CIIARTAEW3 RAILWAY COMP %NY,. Some weeks, ago the franchises and pro perty belonging to. the Chartiers Valley Railroad Company was sold at mortgage sale under decree of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. On Wednesday last the persons in whine behalf the franchises and property were purchasid, met ,at Philadel phia, and made a new organization, under the style of the Chartiers Railway Com pany. We learn that measures will soon be taken to ascertain in what Condition the property is ; that to this end an engineer will go over the line of the road; note what work has been done, in what condition it remains', and determine what must yet be done, and estimate the cost thereof. We are not able to predict a'speedy resumption' and completion of the enterprise. Much will depend on the general financial condi tion of thesountry, and not a little on the spirit with which the people living along the codtemplated route shall meet the new effort. " EDITORIAL GLEANINGS TIIE COLlSCiellee Fund of the Treasury Department is still being Increased by res- titutlons made by parties who have de frauded the Government out of small sums of money.
