' We have already spoken of the situa
tion to which this. great enterprise was
placed by the act of April, 1864, repealing
the charter of the coinpany on all that pis
_ lion of the route lying southeast of Con
, nellsvilie. We now propose to refresh the
memory of our readers as to the road itself,
and its connections.
The Pittsburgh and Counellaville Rail
road begins at the font of "Grant street, on
the bank of the Monongahela river, in the
city of Pittsburgh. It follows the north.
east bank of that river fourteen miles to
the borough of Mckeesport, where the
YOughioglieny unites with the Mononga
hela. Thence the road follows the valley
of the Youghiogheny to Connellsville,
forty-four and a half miles, making the
whole distance from Pittsburgh to Conuells
'title fifty-eight' and a half wales. Tnis
part of the road has been finished and open
to the public for several years, and is at
this moment doing a large and profitable
business. It has added vastly -to the busi
ness and to the permanent valuation of the
country throligh which it, passes, and is of
- great benefit to these cities.
Tet it is but a local road. The prime
object. of the ,enterprise—a direct connee
-t ion with the Baltimore and Ohio itailtoad
at the town of Cumberland, in Maryland—
is still unaccomplished. The universal
financial crisis which culminated in 18'17,
and which so seriously affected all railroad
enterprises for several years, compelled a
suspension of operations upon this line,
except such as were necessary to complete
- the line between this city and Connells
'title, and prosecute steadily the work on
the great Sand Patchlunnel, . 1861 the
coM
pletion of the section between Turtle
Creek sad Pittsburgh gave us a continuous
and independent connection by rail with
Connellsville, and, by a branch, with
Uniontown. •
The great controversy, however, is about
that part of the line lying between Con
nellaville•and Cumberland. The length of
that division Is ninety miles, and the whole I
of it, except about seven miles, lies within
Our own State. From Connellsville the
line continues ap the Youghiogheny nearly
25 miles to the mouths of Casselman's
River, and Laurel Hill Creek. After SS
cending the valley of the latter stream some
three miles, it crosses the ridge dividing
that valley from that of the Casselman. I
. Here there is a short tunnel. Thence it -,1
follows the Talley of thelast named stream
thirty miles to the great Sand Patch tun
nel, passing south of the town of Somer
set, to, Which a branch road, eight miles in
. length, andel' easy grade, has been located.
The line of the road crosses the State line,
in'o Maryland, just at the • southwest cor;
nor of Belford county, and about seven
miles this side of Cumberland.
The highest - grade on any pan of this
road is seventpeight feet to the mile, and
that only on less than three miles on each
side of the summit. From Pittsburgh. to
Myers' Mills, some three. miles from the
summit, the grade in no place need exceed
twenty-six feet to themile. Fromthe sum
mat •to Cumberland, a distance of thirty
two miles, down the- valley of Wilt's
Creek, there is a continuous descendihg
grade. For the greater part of the line,
where there is any grade at all,
,it is kept
at or below 26 feet. Now that the great
tunnel, of which we spoke yesterday, is
almost completed, there is no difficult work
on this ninety miles of road from Cennells
vine to Cumberland.
At Cumberland; as before observed, this
'road will form a junction with the Baltimore
and Ohio Railroad, 178 miles west of Bal
timore, making the entire distance from
Pittsburgh to Baltimore; by this route, 827
miles, and to Washington, Ma the Relay
• House, nine miles this side of Baltimore,
349 miles.
But it will not be necessary to take that
route to Washington; for, at an earlier day
than this road can be possibly be com_plet
' ed, the "METROPOLITAN ROUTE," from
the "Point of• Rocks," (70 mileS we,st. of
Baltimore,)-to Washington, will be knish
ed. The distance, by this route, froth Point
of Rocks .to Washington is only 43 miles.
This will be 49 miler lees than to go round
by the Relay House, and will make the
whole distance from Pittsburgh to Washing
ton just three hundred miles-27 miles near
. en than to Baltimora by this route. This
ahortens the- distance between Fitsbugh
and Washington sesenty-four miles, as
compared with the present route of travel,
Harrisburg and Baltimore. The trip
can be mole from city to city in ten hours,
and the traveler avoid the, yemiUdus and
often, expensive delays to which lee is now
cubjected. (

most direct and important connection at
this point will be with the Cr.avELAND AND
MAIIONINO EXTENSION, which will be tan
tamount to an extension of the load to the
lakes, to the Mississippi, and, in abort, to
• the entire continent west of Pennsylvania,
as far as railroads have been ozhhall be ex

• reaching from the Chesapeake Ifay, the
Potomns, the National Capital, and. the
seaboard cities of the South, to the vast re

and its necessity will be more and more

, Pennsylvania has no right to shut this
avenue It is a glad the Creator, not to
Pennsylvania, and still less to a Pennsyl
vania corporation, but to all the American
people; and if the people of Maryland and
• Ohio'my they wish to improve it, so' that
they can use It as an avenue of communi
cation one with another, for purposes ~
tratio and social intercourse, what right

real case Is still stronger than the one we

1 odious. Were a single rulet,to do such a
thing, it would tarnish his reputation, dis
honor his memory, and history would en
roll him among wrong-doers and oppres
sors. is wrong less infamous because per
petrated by many than if it were done hy
one? Surely not. While speaking of this
thing as we do, we would not for — get that
an apology for tie original wrong may be
found In the presutnption that the men who
divested the Company of Its franchises be
lieved at the time that they had been for
feited. But now we know, and our rep
resentatives know, that they were not for
felted. A , refusal on their part, therefore,
Ito rectify the error of their predecessors,
would hO a dereliction for which no spoi
-1 ogy could be offered.
A. MONTI! AGO the Democratic journals
professed to have discovered a conspiracy
having for its object the election of Gener
al -CAMERON to the United States Senate
by a coalition of -Republican and Demo
cratie members of the Legislature. These
journals, as by pre-concert, joined in ex
pressing great indignation at what they
were pleased to denominate an experiment
upon the political virtue, of their friends.
They seemed to suspect them of an inher
ent weakness, whereby they were unable
to resist a pecuniary inducemeni. General
CamEttoN promptly deniied that lie was
concerned in the enterprise attributed to
him, or that 11. i designed to be engaged in
any such_exploit, and there the matter
ended.
Recently the Democratic newspapers
profess to have discovered another conspi
racy. They now charge that. the friends
of Governor GIIRTIN, dispairing of electing
him to the Senate, will submit overtures to
the Democratic members, proposing to
unit. with them on Mr. W. M. MEREDITH.
This allegation is said to rest oti "a private
letter from a prominent politician at Cham•
harsh urg. - ,„We think there is just as much,
and no more, foundation for this report
than former one—and that is just none at
all.

THAT kr. Raymond, i.s the New York
Times, should be found supporting Mr.
Stevens's North Carolina bill as a proposi
tion that could not "be more generous or
more conservative," answers to one of
those eddies in the swift current of politics
that quite confounds one and impels him
to ask—what next ?—Comniercial.
In essential elements, we do not perceive
wherein the case. of the Times differs from
that of the Commercial. Each of thein fol
lowed the President and advocated his
Policy, until gulfs of financial and political
ruin yawned 'before them. That the Com
,lerebil turned Inch soonest is not due to
its larger development of conscientious
ness, nor to its neuter intellectual percep
tions, but solely to the fact that Allegheny
OW less favorable than New York to
charlatanism of that description. Our
contemporary ought to understand that it
cannot, in this matter, hold up the Times
to scorn without drawing universal hiss
ing upon itself.

I•r is announced that a large manufactur
ing company in - Chicago employS aloung
lady only thirteen years of age as paymas•
ter. She has paid out
,since last May a
quarter of a million of dollais, keeping the
time-sheets, pay roll, and a private account
book with and for each of three to foir
hundred men employed. She receives the
money weekly from the bank to the amount
of $4,000 to $5,000, pays all the men and
settles her balances with the cashier. She
knows every man in the establishment, and
commands a salary of $625 per annum,
'takes two music lessons each week, and at
lends an evening course at a commercial
college, where she has a scholarship. Nor
does this produce any overstrain of her in
tellect. She is said to be in the most ro
bust and. vigorous health.
WE fully concur with the Cleveland
Herald that the managers of the Western
Press Association did not add to their rep
utation for faitness, good sense or decent
manners, at the late meeting at Chicago.

IN Kentucky the Confederates and Con.
seryatives, who naturally acted 'together
last year, are finding some difficulties in
the way of farther cooperation. Each of
these factions is afraid of being ignored by
the other. It is now proposed to reduce
them to harmony by holding up the Radi
cals as an object .of mutual detestation.
On the other hand, it i.e proposed to organ
' ize an unconditional Union party, and
"fight it out on that line." -
A. BILL has been introduced is the Rouse
providing that hereafter Congressional
elections shall be held on the same day in
all the States, viz: On Tuesday after the
first Monday in November in 1868, and iu
every second year thereafter. This is the
day on which the majority of the North
ern States now hold elections. Provision
will bi made in another bill for those States
whlCh have not chosen members of the
Fortieth Congress.
PATRICK FARRELL, a desperate villain
of New York City, died on Monday, last
from the effects of a bullet wound inflicted
'by a policeman. Re w mdiscovered at an
early hour Sunday morning endeavoring
to force an entrance into a grocery store,

as the moat negrly perfect one to arrive at
a true expression of the popular opinion.
Mass-meetings are at best but. mob assem
blies, from which nobody ever expects to
receive a sober delivery, and when a seri
ous purpose is contemplated, no man and
' no party of nien, unless eonsciouß uf the ut
ter weakness of their cause, ever resorts to
them. The delegates can control the mat
ter. They will be held as the accountable
party in it, and as they are known to be
gentlemen, anxious to meet the wishes of
their constituents, it is expected that they
will assume the responsibility and Oct ac
cordingly.
