ed the:Withdrawal of Colonel Porhey from
the senatorial canvass. - I do not mean to
joke et-the galhort Colonel's expense when
I say that no event bas Yet transpired since
the contest began, which has had less ef
fect on the result. I state but the simple
fact. Col. Forney has had his canvass for
the senatorial Wilco more completely in his
own band than :any man probably, who
ever entered the politicalarena. Ile nom
butted himself Ina speech at Lebauen some
six months ago; he centred the only news
paper which , urged his claims; he remain
ed before - the • Legislature as a candidate
withoin a " single _ supporter in that body;
and now abandon' the fight without affect
tug the relative - weugth - cf those. gentle
men' whoie names are mentioned' in con- '
neaten with the office. No act of politi- ,
cal- itiri kart, so startlingly unproductive
of towels, has ever 'occurred in n Pennsyl
*aids: - There was absolutely . nothing in
the man (senatorially speaking) to let out. I
Forney lived in hope that bitterness and "
ascabity of feeling would • mark the sena-
WWI contest, and that dissensions :in the
Republican party would rennin the abut: '
donment cot :the proininent names 'before
the Legislature, and the adoption of same,
one of the weaker candidates, In such a I
contingency l
he had strong hopes that Gea
ry would aid him, and so bring him to the
surface, In this he was mistaken: ,The;
contest lacks ail appearance of that vlo-
lance which many are anxious to see; the
importance of choosing one out of our
wisest heads and bravest hearts to repre
sent us in the National Councils is sOgrad
that second-rate men are overwhelmed by
it; and •-
has indicated - the niost rte.
mistaltablel!preference for Cameron for U.
B.'. Senator.. It was a knowledge of this
-tact which - brought forth Colonel Ariney's
letter - of withdrawal.
The Senatorial contest has assuntei this
.definite shape. Governor Curtin ',ls the
candidate of the conservative Republicans,
Mid will receive the support ef those who
believe that everythingcanbexampromised.
