—The complaint of dullness in business
seem to be rather on the Increase. For
many- months the markets have been in a .
e.ate of utter stagnation, and hopes of re
rival have been oolong unrealized that bust-
nets men have begun to despair of expert;
cueing a shallow of the activity which up
ally prevails at this season of the year. There
are many causes assigned for this state of
things, the prominent of which are. these
three: First, the languor resulting froaithe
overezelteme nt and speculative Inflation in.
cldent to our redundant currency, which has
been subject to sadden and great fluctuations
In value. Secondly, the depression caused by
heavy' and InJcidlcionsly-dhitnrbed taxes,
chiefly those of tile Internal revenue , Thirdly,
the incertitude and appreliciislon resulting
from the talk. about speedy resumption of
specie payments. This suspense checks en
terpriae, and by • impairing- credits is para

by which our material wealth and stational
Prosperity are developed. The po icy of
Congress regarding the currency Is one of
wholesome, gradual, safe contractions, and
was settled by the law of the 11111 of April.

true, but, while there is aid an excessive re
