villages lie in the quiet and fertile valley
between this and Shepherd Mountain,
which is a third, and a still larger mass of
iron ore.
The ore of Pilot Knob is nearly black,
solid, fine...grained, heavy and rich, but not
quite equal to that: of Iron Mountain,
which, when freshly broken, has a metal ,
is lustre,. and lmore nearly resembles cast
iron in appearance than any ore I have
seen. That of Shepherd Mountain is
strongly magnetic; but of its appearance
and relative quality I cannot speak, for We
had not time to visit it. There are two
furnaces at Pilot Knob in full operation,
using charcoal. At Shepherd. Mountain
there is at least one furnace. No mineral

After our long and very, pleasant and in

two miles beyond .the junction of the

On Monday morning, the 19th, the eastern 1

iron. Pilot Knob is, I believe; 8:3 miles
from St. Louis, with which it i'onnected 1
by ra.lioad. We were accompanied by a
large party of the ladies and gentlemen of
