more of mornings on that much worn
pavement - do you see the beautifully tit.,t.

fresh from some foughten field of the Con

and this morning's soda water. Nay,
weep not the departed! They staid in

bought at barely remunerative prices, the

nevertheless very important. The skirt should

Introduce what is known as the Bloomer cost
ume. For example: In my school at peg ington '
Massachusetts. I had more Uteri a hundred
fashionable young ladles last winter, all of
whom wore constantly during the school year
the short dress, the gymnastic costume, while
all tile fashionable ladies etthe village out
side of the institution adopted the saute dress.
Indeed, It is almost rare to see In Lexington a
lady with along dress. An attempt to intro
duce the Bloomer costume, 11 um sure, :would .
have proved a fallure—not In our own house,
perhaps but In Its Inftuehee outside. All
through our part, of the country, when we go
out to ride, we see ladies in the short dress.
Indeed, some of the clergymen, who observed
that our young ladies changed for the long
dress on going to Church, came to me to say
that they hoped I would atiow them to come in
Weir short dress, for they Liked very touch to
see them. :A single lady appearing In the
streets of Boston in the. regular Bloomer cos.
tame attracts a crowd of boys, while twenty
of out. young ladles can go Into Boston with
out remark or notice. The fact is, we men and
hose are very Jealous of our breeches; but the
gymnastic costume does not involve that gar
ment, and eo we lords of creation give our
consent to its adoption by our sisters. •
