(AELITiONAI LOCAL HEWS ON FIEST HAM)
Ladies , Relief Society, Allestiony City
The annual meeting of the AssoOlatlon was
held on Monday, November. sth, 1666,,and a
'resolution ordering the report of the publica
tion of the Secretary and Treasurer was parsed.
It was also resolved, that in the death of
12dtasJane Taney. the Society has lost a wortby
and devoted to embflr, whose works of charity
torn' wilt follow her. To the Widows'
(tome she had contributed the sum of live hun
dred dollars.
The following Whew's and managers for the
ensuing year were elected:
. Prestdent—Mrs. Gen. Robinson.
Vice .President—Mn. J. T. MeClarets.
Secretary—Mrs. R. W. Poindexter. -
Treasurer—Mrs. R. D. Thompson. -
Illimagers—EireA4. 8. Hays, Mrs. F. B. Bru.
not, Mrs. Dr. Trevor, Mrs. Breading, Mrs. Pat
terson, Mrs. Walter Bryant, Mrs. Lowry, Mrs.
J. F. Jennings , Mrs. Li. Palmer. Mrs. Hoag,
Mrs. Oliver McClintock, Mrs. Cochran, Miss
Coo Per, Mses Fleming, Mrs. Dr. Hussey, Miss
Pussy, Miss Bell, Was Jane Smith, Miss Mor
rison.
Anotbei - year has been added to the history
of the Lafilea , 'Esher Society of Allegheny
City, but the work la by no means ended. The
necessity for Its self-denying Labors is as great,
as at any timo in its pest history. The Lord
has placed the poor in our m Wet, and He has
Made it the duty of those to whom .lie haS
given this world's goods; to use them liberal
ly for the relief of tho needy and suffering,
who not only claim the common sympathies
of humanity, bbt the more substantial com
forts of life, and the success of appeals here
tofore made to a generous public is a guaran
toe thatLthe appeal now made will not bo In
vabi. Be. ye,warmed and tilled," are kind
words, but unaccompanied by laborious self
denial, are of Mao effect.
The aim of the ladles of tide Si ciety is ito
seek out the suffering and destitute who aro
worthy—furnisieg them with clothing, food,
and fuel, and ministering at the bedside of
the sick. They ask those who are immersed
in business or pleasure to offer the means no
corsary for their relief.
The following Is an account of the illstribn
. Wm of articles during the past winter, viz:
4,701 bushels of coal; WO yards of flannel; 403
yards of Jesnsr 719 yards of calico; 51 . 2t4 yards
of muslin; effiyards of limey; 140 pairs of
shoes; groceries G bed ticks. The Society
hereby acknowledges the receipt of 1,900
els of coal from lira Bremen estate. In additien
to what la repotted above.
Of the one hundred and sixty-eight families
who were relieved during the past winter,
about ones-hundred and fifty were widows,
tol. 'rig to support the little ones dependant
on teem.
It may not be known in this world, of the
weight Of care and anxiety lifted from the
widow and orphan reliefted by our contribn-
Lions, but Is the last great' day 'of account,:
when the records of time are unsealed, the
L•rrti mar say "lensmucli as ye have dune it;
utto ore. rf Olileast Wf• • these, ye have
done it unto me."
Rich care is exercised by the society(in
discriminating between the hilt:Land trftem
',crate, and the worthy but unfortunate; and
its record through the 'many years of its ex
istence, is a sufficient guarantee that all con
tributions to the treasury will bo Judiciously
applied.
Themembers of the society are far from . any
I disposition to relax in their efforts to do
good. The field Is annually enlarging, and
itfhreased labor Is demanded. Let our molgto
ever be "onward and upward;" and in hata
ble reliance upon a merciful God, the giver
of all good.let us enterapon the new year's tu
bers with renewed coal, hoping to Impart
mucu gladness and joy to sorrowful and
at; Ickes hearts; and by labors of love add
many tributes of praise to the blessed Savior
the grear exemplar of charity and humanity.
