As tho results there- of, she was subsequently delivered of a female child, Atter acc.outplishing his pur pose, Bruce caused her to be conveyed to a hotel where she was cared for and sent home the next day. She identified Bruce from his moto graph, and subsequently met him in the street, and fully identitied him. A warrant for the arrest of Bruce on the charge of rape was issued at Amheistburg. The of fense is a capital one in Canada, and Bruce preferred not to stanttlio chances of atrial and fled to this side. There being no other way uf reaching him, a civil suit for damages was commenced against him in the courts. It seems like' a mild way of treating a criminal, such as he is alleged to be. It is a crime•which human nature instinctively puts da,urn as next to murder In the criminal code, but, under the cir cuntstances a civil suit seems to he the only one that can hold in the courts of the States. _ . Miss Isabella Lemey testified that on the evening of the occurrence in Ambersthurg she was going home , from singing school about ten o'clock, when she met Bruce dragging the plaintiff along the street, and that the latter endeavored to get sway from him and caught hold of the fence, from which the villain wrested her grasp. She fully Identified both parties, having long known Bruce by sight. It was a bright moonlight night. The father and mother of Miss Vernor corroborated her testimony as to her condition on arriving home, and subsequently as to her identify. lug Bruce from his photograph, and after ward meeting him in Detroit. 'rhe testimony:of the defense was sim ply to endeavor to show some discrepancies in the testimony of Miss Verner, but they were very frivolous and seemed to have no weight. An attempt was also made to prove an alibi. The mother and sister of Bruce swore that he was at home and in bed at the time the offense was alleged to have been committed. But the testimony of Miss Verner was supported by that of Miss Lemay, who testified that she fully re cognized Bruce as the person she met dragging a woman along the street. Altogether the evidence was overwhelm. ing against the defendant Miss Verner told a straight forward and evidently truthful story, anti the jury could not do otherwise titan believe it. Accordingly after a brief coesultation they brought in • verdict tignit st the detention', and awarded the plaintiff $lO,OOO damages, the amount claimed.
