When they with anguish of heart tell us
that if "My Policy" succeeds, they MUSS
leave their homes and flee for safety, is it
because they are unable to understand it?
Are its present workings so entirely differ
ent from what it will he if allowed to per
fect Itself? Why is it that rebels and rebel
sympathizers alone understand it? Do not
the freedmen, who at the risk of life sus
tained our arms, feeding and secreting our
soldiers, fleeing from southern hells, but
who now sea brothers, eons, wives and
fathers hung on trees or shot in the streets
of cities, understand it? Do not the sir
riving sufferers of the Memphis riot or the
New Orleans massacre understand it? Do
not the noble men of Vermont, and Maine,
who have not usually been regarded as an
inferior race, with their 25,000 majorities,
understand it? To affirm that these men do
not understand it one must claim for him
self superior intelligence or sagacity?
Whether it is superior or inferior, let the
people decide, They hare already begun
to render their verdict, and it will be giv.

that the author of the above words will
take counsel and understand. Tho people
do understand who are on the side of free

They know, as only one who is honest and
true to himself must know, whether as-
DREW Joinveos, elected Vice President, ot,
pledges given by his acts and words, is true
to them or not; whether his policy is adap

the South or not. They have intelligence
and sagacity enough to know that "some
thing is rotten in Denmark," when the
most intelligent, tried and true mei; the
men who have by all the means in their
power defended their country, are now de
