The beautiful new Jewish Synagogue egi y cb eyu a Tioe of Life, at the Darner Of Market and Second streets, was dedicated yesterday, with the ceremonies peculiar to the Hebrew faith. The Synagogue itself is a very hand some apartment in the second story of the building. It Is plainly but neatly fitted up, and dews great credit to the enterprise anti taste of the little congregation--only members—whe have undertaken and success fully carried forward the work. This congre gation formerly had their Place Of Meeting 1n Lafayette Hall. On the deetraction of that building, they procured theirpresmt 'Maiden. The building Was ranch dilapidated and need ed redline changes. These changes have been Made anti at drat with regalia that seemed almost impossible The new SynagOgue willseat about five hen. dred people with - ease. The seats and most of the Wood work are grained In imitation of oak and present a very neat appearance. A gal lery ru ans along tie() sides and across one end Of the partmen and le Itirnished seats similar to those t, below. At the end of the room next to the street, facing the congrega tion. In the Ark, a high, narrow structure of salt, draped in front withea white curtain. In this ark are deposited the three scrolls of the Law, on the curtain are embroidered in blue Hebrew lettere the words, "Crown Of the Law." Surmounting the. ark is a handsome frame of ash wood, surrounding two tables of white glass, on which are blazoned in golden Hebrew characters the Ten Commandments. Immedi ately In front of the Ark Is the pulpit, and in front of this and separated from It by a rail ing Is the enclosure for the choir. tin each side of the Ark is an enclosed seat for the Pre,- ideal and Vice President. The Synagogue is lighted by nearly one hundred gas jets about the walls, and a remarkably handsome chan delier of ten lights suspended from the ceiling, the fixtures being the work of Messrs. Jarvis, Halpin Co. of Fourth street. Many considered It strange that a Jewish dedication should take place on the Christian Sabbath. It Is explained by the fact that yes terday was the last day of the Jewish Old Year. To-day is the beginning of the mouth Fisari, of the year 50M, from the creation. Tho preparations for yesterday's ceremonies were very tasteful as well as peculiar. In the windows and over the doorways hung besial fel wreaths of flowers and evergreens. Over the entrance below was placed a rich festoon of flowers. The table of Use ten eommead ments and the pulpit were crowned with handsome boqueta, and all the lights wore burniag, as is the requirement of use Jewish Church during the time of prayer. At snout three o'clock the congregation as sembled, the lattice occupying the gallery ex clusively, and the men sitting below, such with his hut on, which struck a stranger as most Indecorous proceeding. At half-past three a procession of the members, headed by the Great Western Brass Band, escorted the President from his residence to the Syne. gogue. First marched the Preacher, P.cr. D. ilertzman, bearing the largo scroll or the Lace, crowned with a wreath. Next came G. Graefener. the President., and L. Berg. its, Vice President, each oearing a smaller Scroll, Following came A. Abrams, the Secretary, with r a the choir, consisting of three men ant little boy. Arrived al the Synagogue the Pastor knock ed at the door, demanding that tee Laws he admitted to the new House of God. They were admitted, and at the inner door the Pas tor and Ills companions, with tite choir, paus ed and chanted a prayer, "praying tit the. law," as they termed it. They then marched chanting down the aisle to the pulpit mind laid their scrolls reverently ou the desk. The band played, end the three servile were times borne through the cot gregatlon, the Pastor remaining in the pulpit end ehetilltle. Joslan Cotten, Eng., of the Pittsburgh bar, had been eh sun to deliver the dedication whirrs, and at this point Caine forward to the coin tilesioed by reading tic, p. nyer ul nommen at the diallealion of the MU" Wad. nineent of temples, two thousand sis hundred and ninety-nine years ago. The speaker then reviewed briefly and In tithing terms the rise and downfall of the first great temple, and later, of the great temple of Jorusweni. Ile then spoke et the vicissitudes of the Jewish people, saying that In the darkest days of their history it might truly be said_of them: "The wild dove bath its nest; The foxes have their cave; Mankind has its country, Is its grave. Through all its manifold persecution Judaism has lived, and for more than three thousand years has maintained Its unity. In other days, and an other countries, oppression of every form tried to crush It out. Now a bet ter day has dawned. In every land the Jew is recognized now 1121 having rights. This change is due to the growth of the spirit of freedom everywhere in our day, and here, In America, where this spirit has its fullest growth, has been accorded the fullest and most precious liberty to the Jews. Tim speaker kern reviewed the duties of the Jewish people, and exhorted them to observe them with the utmost strictness, lie besought them to firmly stand by their religion, and presently the mists of bigotry and prejudice reels! flee before before the bright sun of the nineteenth century. Be contrasted the occa sion which they celebrated with the present political condition of the country. The dedi cation of their new temple was typical of re newcd and enlarged liberty for their people, while all over our country roll dark clouds of doubt and despondency. Bad, despotic men on every side are endeavoring to destroy the fruits of our terrible war, and bring the sacri fice of thousands of precious lives to nought. Every effort Is being made by traitors in nigh places, and in low, to be. ray the country anew Into the hands of its extender. He prayed that the elements of discord in our midst might die, and that the dark and growing spot on our sun might disappear; that we might speedily have rulers whose conduct in life should be based on the precious example of the martyred Lincoln,"wlth malace toward none, wlth charity for all." With a fitting peroration the speaker clos ed hie very able and polished address!, which bar/ been listened to throughout with the most earnest attention. Verily if that address and the manner of its reception be any stand ard, JewLsh-A.menean patriotism is no dead thing. Al the conclusion of the address more pray ers were chanted, and with the appropriate cereMOrtieS the three scrolls of Inc Law were deposited In the ark, after which the congre gation dispersed.
