Major General L'oolbasigh, an officer of the
South American army, is at present spending
a few weeks at Phillipsburg, Beaver county.
General Coolbeugh was educated at West
Point, was an omeer in our regular army, and
served for some time on the staff of General
McPherson. Resigning his commission In
'sett, he left for South America, and Immedi
ately connecting Maisel! with the army of
that country, he has risen to the rank of a
Major General In Its service. Ms mission to
this vicinity at the present time i.e to provide
artillery for his adopted country; and wo be
lieve that the Fort I Works at Pittsburgh
are now completing several pieces of cannon
for him, which be designs taking with him on
his return to South America. lie was former
ly a resident of this State, and we think in
ISMS his father was one of the Canal Commis
sioners of Pennsylvania. Ills lady is with him
at Phillipsburg at the present time, and both
return Ina few days to their distant home.
Attempted Rape
A few days since a negro named Charles
Smith attempted to rape the person of a white
girl, named Elizabeth McCullough, at the
house of Mr. C. Blackburn, Coleraine town.

Mr. B. and family being absent from home the
negro caught the girl on the porch, and after
a covers struggle she succeeded in making her
escape np stairs, haying her clothing almost
torn to pieces. Complaint was made before
Squire lleyberger, when the negro was arrest
ed and in default of bail was committed to
the county prison for trial. While officer Simi
lenberger was conveying him to prison he
made his escape at the Green Tree. A reward
of OW I. offered for his arrest.

On Friday two weeks ago, Mr. Milo Barnes,
of Freedom, Beaver county, went from hit'
borne to island Run, to assist In re-arranging
the machinery of an oil well, in which he was
interested. While at work about Hie well a
heavy stream of gas ascended from it, which,
coming in contact with the furnaces, caused an
explosion. Mr. Barnes being within Its area
was badly burned on the back, arms and face.
