Tho Point Malt nooses.
Among the improvements going forward in
the city' we notice that our well known fellow
citizen W. 11. Garrets!, Esq., the proprietor of
the celebrated Point Malt !louses, is largely
extending nts facilities for business. The
great increase of patronage awarded to this
prosperous establishment, neoesaltated the
erection of a now malt house, which is now
being put no in a most extensive and substan-
WI manner, at the rear of the time honored
old malt house, on Water street. The latter is
one of the historical buildings of the city.
Errected in 1810, it has proudly weathered the
storm, and to-day is one of the most substan
tial and complete malt houses in the country.
Mr. Garrard woutirbot suffer it to be removed,
es he lira too much veneration for the good
old style In which such buildings were erect
, eil in our fathers. it is six stories lush, and
has the facilities of Immense storage of grain,
and in the matter of kills, growing floors,
steep tube. Ac., has no superior even at this
modern day, although built some fifty-eta
years ago.
The now house is being constructed in the
most improved method, combining all the re
cent innovations, together with extraordinary
strength and durability. To give the reader
in Idea of the capacity of this structure, we
might mention that there are to be three
growing floors with the dimensions of 119 feet
long by CS .feet wide, with a range of grain
floors of similar Mit. The kilns are Q feet by
ZS feet, while the tubs used for steeping the
grain are nine feet in diameter, built of r
wood, and capable of holding over three c bun- -
dred:bushels of grain. Tile kilns are floored
with a new and novel perforated iron flooring,
w bleb is mid to possess superior merits over
all others In use. We confess our inability to
do full Justice to these mammoth malt houses.
They would certainly repay a visit from per
sona Interested in the commercial growth of
the city. Few of our citizens are unacquaint
ed with the senior member of the firm, who
transact business at this extensive home,
and who, we might truthfully assert,
monopolize the malt trade. W. H. Garrard.
Esq.,ls one of the truly representative mar
chants of the city, and has been recognised
as a' leader in commercial circles for
nearly an ordinary life time. Through
honesty. fair dealing and integrity he has suc
ceeded in building up a large and profitable
trade, commandmg the patronage of dealers
in nil sections of the country. With him are
associated Messrs. D. A. Booth and W. T. Gar
rard. The former is en agreeable and accom
modating centleman and shrewd business
man, and the latter, a son of Mr. tiarrard's Is
too well known In commercial circles as a
prompt and native young merchant to need
any' 'Nord of commendation from us. do con.
elusion we would cheenifully recommend this
firm to the patronage of the community,
knowing their faellitica tabs unsurpassed and
unlimited, and their business reputation of
the very best character. Farmers who have
wheat, corn. rye, barley, or oats to dispose of
wilt always find the hest market at the Point
Malt Houses. NM. 5 and 7 Penn street and 17
