patches announced tbat General GEARS
was at Washington - , deeply interested in
securing such an adjustment of the Tariff
as_ would protc‘xjt the miners of bituminous,
coal in Penneylyititia limn foreign compe
tition. • Beyond these announcments wr
known nothing of.t.hb Matter. But the
Troy (N. Y.) Whig is highly indignant
with General -Gnexcx,, and expresses the I

strates how easy it is for fluent people to

know nothing. Let us take a specimen
"Tito people have Wert the victims of
extortionate and exorbitant prices on coal
quite long enough. Last winter in this
City they were compelled to pay fifteen
dollars per ton by a monopolising combi
nation. The extortions practiced in the
coal: trade have been little less than down. ,
right swindles. The trausportationlines
combined and put up prices of freight
enormously. The owners'-of mines also
combined, and in fact every ono connected
porith-the trade conspired to :keep up prices,
and none scented satisfied with moderate
profits,"
