Daniel Mayhew, Mary,his wife, and Sylves
'ter, his son, were indicted for resisting officer
John Grants, of Birirdngham, in thedischarge

Frederick Neuf, of Lower St. Clair, pleaded
guilty to selling. liquor without license, and
was sentenced to pay a fine of forty dollars
and the costa.
Louisa Myers, of Birmingham, pleaded Frail
ty to a like offense, and was fined ten do
and the orsta.
William , Baker, colored, whs tried and
foundigality =the larceny of a coat, valued at
forty dollars, from a gm= at the Union Depot
Hotel. Defendant was employed at the hotel
es waiter, and. whilst aiding tu. that capacity
broke open Meallse and took therefrom the
coat. He led for the out, was captured at
Harrisburg, Ind on his return aelmowledaol
his guilt to ftes =doer having bhp In charge;
also stating thet he admitted a person to the
hotel In the night, aMerattimes, for the pur

The same defendant was next pie:nylon trial
for the larceny of eighty-nye dollars from
Scott ftnighbanka, a fellowmalter at the Union
Hotel. The evidence was altogether circum
stantial, but, inthe - opinion of the jury, suf
ficiently strong to warrant a verdict of guilty.
The same defends= pleaded guilty to en as
sault and battery on oath of Scott Hughbanks.
Remanded for sentence.
Henry Davis was Indicted for felonious so

' An assistant of the Freedmen's Bureau, In
making a tour through South Carolina. re
ports the supply of labor inadequate to the
demand, but where enosistance is not want
ing labor will be quite as productive this sea
son as others when capital owned labor. In
parts of the Chesterfield District the supply
Of provisions is nearly exhausted, and great
suffering will come upon all classes unless
speedily relieved by Me tiovernment. It is
estimated Dist ninety thousand bushels ol
corn and one hundred thousand pounds of
bacon, provisions for three months, in addition
to that now in the hands of planters, will be
required to supply the neoessary laborers till
the harvesting of crops. These supplies the
planters have neitherthe eas bluer the credit to
purchaae, and unless relief comes from the
Government, many of the plantations will be
abandoned by the freedmen, who will go in
Search of employment where they can get sel

A canvass of the House made to-day, and
wonting Wine members expected to arrive
tomorrow morning, It is estimated that the
Constitutional Amendments will pass by
about 117 or 136, or nearly live to one.
The House Committee on Banking to-day
agreed to report an amendment to the Nis
amid Bank act to prevent any bank havlLg
over ei.,ocopoo simulation, and to reduce to
eighty per cent. the circulation of all banks
with over $500,000 capital.
The Senate Finance Committee are consid
ering a proposition to allow State banks one
year mom to wind up or convert their char
ters into National banks. Under the present
law, those which are not wound up by July
are liable to a tax of ten per cent.
Information has been received at the office
of the Light House Board that the light house
at Bay Point, Port Royal Harbor, was entirely
destroyed by a tornado which visited that
vicinity on the Y9th at.
At an informal meeting of Senators to-dav,
it was decided to close the present session of
