EXECUTION OF PROBST
331.8 XaAIIEIPT 3301:71=1.113.
(From ourSpeclol Correspondent.]
Pertanmenra, June Bth, 1864.
Messrs. Editors Gazette: There never was a
more horrid crime—or series of murders com
mitted upon the continent than those planned
and executed by the fiend Probat. With the
particulars of the murder of the Dearing fam
ily few of your readers are not mlacquainted,
mad I need not here rsprodoce the sickening
narrative. The heart which amen ted the seed
and nerved the arm or the wicked mo nster
. is
no mom The author of the eight-fold maids:
IS in eternity. Ere this ho has stood be
fore the Dread Tribunal of Justice, and, out
of charity, lot us hope that God has dealt mer
cifully with the wretched criminal, for whose
blood the worldealled in vengeance.
1118 LAST 1i101713. 03 WALT II
The unfortunate criminal passed his last
night upon earth In a calm unbroken sleep.
Last night, about nine o'clock, Rev. Father
Grundner, his spiritual adviser, administered
to him the sacrament of pennanee and Holy
Eucharist, and urged him to take rest in order
to be prepared for the terrible fate no near at
band. At four o'clock he was roused from his
slumber by the zealous priest. Upon getting
up from his pallet he expressed himself mach
refreshed, and said that he felt more than ever
prepared to meet his God. He partook of a
hearty breakfast, and seemed more cheer
ful and resigned. A alight perceptible
tremor shook his stout frame when Father
Grunder told him that ho would administer
the last rites of the Church, since his time on
earth was rapidly drawing to a close. After
the administration of the sacraments the
prisoner was actively engaged in prayer
with the clergyman About ten o'clock,
Sheriff Howells made his appearance at the
Jail, and word was sent to Father Grander
that the fatal hour liked for the execution
had arrived, and so to inform the wretched
man. Probst received the announcement in
an undisturbed manner, and turning to the
priest whispered that he was ready to die for
his sins. The Sheriff with a few representa
tives of the prose then entered the cell, the
culprit receiging them with a faint, ghastly
smile, keeping his oyes intently fixed upon a
small brass crucifix which he held clasped be
tween his hands. The Sheriff in a few emo
tional words informed the prisoner that he
was there to carry out the terrible sentence
of the law passed upon him for the frightful
offence for which he had been convicted, and
concluded by asking him if he was prepared
for eternity. The prisoner stood with the
email. folded to his breast, and calmly sail,
'.l.t Is eo, 1 am ready."
=I
There was no dross for death. The prisoner
cast a glance about his narrow prison and
beckoned the procession to proceed. The
Sherrill and superintendent Perkins took the
lead to this mournful march to the gallows. The
condemned Probst, with the crucifix still in
ids hands. marched firmly to the instrument
of death, and was closely followed by bls
spiritual advisers and the few visitors admit-
Led to the execution. The solemn matron of the
cortege of death was very impressive and it
shade of suppressed sorrow was Visible in
every' countenance, and yet all knew that the
doomed man had no sympathy for hie helpless
victims. The pions priest eontintudly ejacu
lated supplications to the Throne of Grace for
thee plritual welfare of the condemned felon,
who, in a religious fervor continually kissed
the tiny emblem of ealcatlott which he bore in
his hand.
The scaffold was at length reached and
Probst ascended It with a firm, elastic step. The
condemned knelt and j °lined with seeming test
and sincerity In he prayers offered by his re
ligious advisers. Atter a tow short minutes
spent in prayer the priests retires and the
snenff proceeded to perform the Mat some. -
ful duties of preparing the culprit for death.
His hands were drawn backend fastened with
military handcuffs, his legs were pinioned,
and the rope was carefully adjusted about his
neck. After the rope was tiled, the doomed
men moved his bead Wilms' It In better posi
tion, an I cast a last loOk upon earth. Ills lips
were moving as though hie whole soul entered
into the last supplication for forgiveness from
that God be had so long and grievously dallied
and offended. The white coy of Iniquity, was
tnen drawn over his face, and the wretch.'
murderer Mid taken nis LIM loctk upon things
of mortal lift, Father Grammer knelt upon the
scaffold steps and devoutly uttered the pray
ers oftho church for the departing spirit till
the Sheriff drew away the fatal prep and the
body of the ilend Probst hung suspended in
scrid.eir, spurned by earth but We
was
not a
mockery to Hoare. His n&lc was instantly
broken. A few convulsive movements of the
muscles of the body and all was over. The ln
noccat, Victims of the fiendish murderer were
avenged. Justice was satiated,
Atter remaining suspended about twenty
minutes life was pronounced extinct. and the
corpse was cut down and landed to the medi
