Wo have the ttfcketat the head ot our second and a brief Kriow of the so cinjand political record or the individnal candidates will not bo out of place For the office of Sheriff; a very impor taut one, Samuel B. Cluley lias been nominated. He was born in Philadelphia m 1828, bm at a very early age came to this city and mado It his home. Ho learned the carpenter trade, which he successfully followed for a number of years. Possess., ing a naturally gifted mind, he abandoned the trade and became one of the reportorial corps of the Pittsburgh Dwpateh. His connection with that Journal was of the most pleasing and satisfactory nature, and the warm manner in which our neighbor advocated his nomination may lw at tributed to old associations. In 18T>7 be was Cbosemby SboriffßoDv Pattehson as Ids ■Depatjy which position lie held up to the close of that official's term or office. Sher iff Patteiison was succeeded in office by James L. Graham, who reappointed Mr Clulet as Deputy. In 1860, Sheriff Gra ham was succeeded in office by the lament ed Harry Woods, who, upon assuming bis duties, retained Mr. Cluley as Deputy In August, 1863, Sheriff Woods was sum. moned to eternity, and the eommunity strongly urged upon Governor Curtis the appointment or Mr. Cluley to fill the va cancy tlms occasioned. He consented to accept the office for Ulf um , x piled term, three months, and permitted the widow of his predecessor to draw the emoluments accruing from the office At the expiration or his brief term, the present • incumbent, John H. Mr. Cluley is a pleasant, affable gentle, man, a firm advocate of human "liberty, and a faithful, trnstworthy menilicr of the Union Bepublican party. He is immensely popu lar with the voters of the county, and no better man could have been selected to lead the ticket The public interest demands that be be elected to an office in which be has bad snob ripe experience. F«r Clerk- of the Courts, also an impor tant office, the Convention wisely conferred the nomination upon an empty-sleeve pnt riot, Jou.s G. Brown, Hampton township, into of Company II 1 Odd p„ Volunteers. Mr. B. was a brave and gallant soldier, and received the wound which renders him incajialdo or performing manual ialsir :il the Hattie of Seven I'incs. He is a gentle man or good bUßim-ss qnalillcalions and scholastic attainments. He won for liiui -> self an enviable reputation as a clerk in Provost Marshal Aster’s office of this district. He is a plain, unassuming gentle man, and numbers a host of friends. His nomination conclusively proves that Un patriotic masses arc willing to recognize the claims of a wounded soldier upon their gratitude, and to acknowledge in a sub stantial manner ihe services rendered oor flog In the hour of trial. Udou Alexander llu.amis was conferred the nomination of Clerk of the Orplians' Court. Mr. H. i B a thorough gentleman, and in every resfiet-l worthy of the nomination. It was given hint as are cognition of his unfaltering devotion to the principles of the party. If elected he will make oiutttcntiTe and cfficicni officer. There is not a more popular Diun upon the ticket than Mr. Hllands, and he win poll a very heavy vote. Henry Snively is the candidate for Recorder. He is a gentleman ‘ thor oughly experienced in business matters, and no wiser selection could have been made. At present he is employed as chief clerk in the Coonty Controller’s office. Hg is a trno patriot, and has ever been a work, ing member of the party which places him in the field as a candidate. Joseph H. Okay, of Plum township, late private in the 105th Pennsylvania Yol untoers, has been nominated /or Register. This brave gentleman enlisted in 1881, and served with honor. and distinction until wounded at the battle of Fair Oaks, in 1803. Ho was shot in the leg and render ed a cripple for life. Mr. Gbay is a gentle- Buu >; endowed with superior business tal ent and is n ripe scholar. He will make an energetic and capable officer. For Commissioner Gboboe Jlamii,. toh, has been nominated. We 4fc<e| . that Mr. Hamilton. is too well known throughout the county to need any word of commendation from us. Ho is a firm, un flinching Republican, and worthy of the suffrage of every loyal voter. John. F. Dravo, Mifllin township, has been nominated for Director ol the Poor. The Convention, in selecting Mr. Dravo for this office, took into consideration his goodness of heart and humane, Christian character. If elected, the charitable com. mttnity may rest assured that the duties of the office will not be neglected. He is a staunch, reliable Union Republican. Perhaps the most Important object to the people is to secure intelligent apd trust worthy representatives in tho Assembly , They should be experienced, shrewd men men who fear not doing their duty and ■ whose integrity is unimpeachable. Buck have beon placed in nomination, and we doubt whether better citizons couid.be fbund In the county. Messrs. Geoboe Wilson, of Ktt township; Georoe Y. Me- Kee, North. Fayette township; William Pkteb, Ross township; R. a. Colville, city; Samuel Chai>wick, Collins township, and John P. Glass, city, aro the candi dates. Col. John P.
