Crossing the upper Binalngham bridge, yes
terday morning, wo observed a bullock start
from the Ihrminglutin shore and plunge Into
the river. The animal passed boldly tote the
water, and, getting beyond bus depth, for a
LIM., swam about the rafts moored near the
bridge. Presently'lle struck out, apparently
for the opposite shore, and had gained very
nearly the middle of the river, wh in, the wiml
being the contrary, he dropped down with the
current, inissing between the piers of the
bridge. Judging it to be impossible for the
animal to reach his seeming destination, we
anxiously watched proceodlegs,leeking every
moment to see him sink beneath toe surface
and drown Meanwhile the owner made his
appearance on the bank, and was looking
about for a skill, with a view of making an
effort to save his property. The bullock
had become somewhat exhausted and,
aftr_r reaching a point about one hundred
yards below the bridge, turned about anti
headed for the shore from which he bad
started, progressing quite slowly and keeping
his bead above the water with apparent great
exertion. Finally, in nearing the bank, he
touched bottom and walked ashore, not much
the worse for the ablution and exercise, and
greatly to the relief of a number of spectators
who had watched his movements With great
interest and anxiety, particularly the owner,
who, ere this item is read, has perhaps slaugh
tered and exposed for sale in his stall the
butchered remains of the bullock.

CITY PM NEIG 111 011110011
(ADDITIONAL ON FIRST PA vr.)
The Pulpit — alou-Confonntly to the
World.
The Rev. Herrick Johnson, of the third Pres
byterian Church Of this city, delivered to his
people on Sabbath morning last a discourse
on the above subject.. It was listened to with
an interest and satisfaction that warrant our
introducing its leading thoughts to our tend
on.
The text, as suggested by or heading, was
the find clause of Romans zit 2. The general
sense Of this precept, remarked the preacher,
is plain enough. Its application is not no
easy. Different classes in Stalely and differ
ent sehOola of religions thinkers will be hirely
to disagree herein. Some would make it
Simply exclude vire and Crime, and leave the
door open to the largest license; others think
they satisfy its chums by occasional sets of
devotion and aelf-dental, while still ethers
think It shots them up in the cell of the asce
tie. Its sphere is .evidently outside pal
pable and acknowledged sin. its Just in
terpretation is an answer to the question
what demands our religion makes on us in
this sphere.
The quMiOn is a difficult One- It would be
easy, saihe, speaker, to treat it in a loose
declamatory way, dealing out wbelesale de
nunciations on every hand. Butr.Said ho, I
would awry the ponselenes of each hearer
with me, and 1 Worse right to expect that so
far as my deductions from the text seem
Just, they will and their way Into the lives of
those whose ascent they gain.
Firstly,—then, to whom was this rule given,
not to an association of reformed Idolaters fie
such. It was to a church as distinguished,
in that e.nd in all ages, from the worlt..
Secondly—To what 1100 a applyl To the
heart, indeed, aft the seat of pure religion, but
to this as the fountain of motive and so of no-
Lion. A. strange cleansing of a fonntain, that,
which does not effect Its streams! Our tex t '
said the preacher, demands of the church a
certain singularity.
In defining this singularity, the reverend
gentleman was exceedingly happy, both In
guarding and in illustrating his sentiments.
There are good qualities fonnd among men of
the world, said he; so far as these go, we are
to conform to the world. Christ commends
some of the displays of the wisdom of such.
The prohibition of the text looks to things in
themselves or by their associations Injurious.
Yet, again, not gratis vice and crime. These
are less inferentially forbidden elsewhere.
What then is the jurisdiction of this law! It
is that widenehl, not covered by express stat
ute, in which, nevertheless, a contrast is call-,
.1 for between the elmreh and the world. lt
embodies a general. principle that roaches to
an endless cathlogne of eases. What! exclaim
ed the preacher, enlarging on this theme is
the world to dictate to the chores her social
laws, And mast the Chriattan, who would con

step of his defection from loynty to his Master ;
by a direct enactmentl It Is not enough that
we got nu harm from any given indulgenee—
quemionable as even that a—it must he astar-
Lathed that we do no harm thereby.
The conclusion of the discourse was a di
rect and bold application of the principle ol
the text to the frequenting by Christian men
of such places of amusement as the theatre,
the opera [Know anti the circus. The moral
character, In general, of the allachrs of these
establishumnts, and their uniformly irreli
gious and immoral tend encies, he portrayed
In terms that argued an earnestness which
would not consent to sacrifice truth and Ile
foreetel preaentatlon to prudish delicacy' of
taste. Other pollute raised in this connection
were The uniform testimony in all ages, not
I the Church only, Catholic and Protestant,
but also of heathen moralists, against three
amusements; the opinions ot the world, for
ward as they are to apologies, for such license
the emetics, of devout Chrbdians in nil time,;
the growing aigrette'. for these things In pro.
irtion to the Increase of spirituality ; and our
allngunes to die or have our children dill
in the millet of such seance. The ball room
and the card table also came in for a share of
attention.

for his actions.

The case was submitted at ono o'clock, and
after a brief absence the jury retuniml with a
verdict of not guilty as to Phillips and Elliott,

The President is preparing a proclamation
