The gold market is steady In New York to
day at I. The effect of the large shipment
On Wednesday was bounteracteel by a sale of
more th.n an equal amount by the govern
ment at 1303• Doubtless we would have aeon
quotations at 1X8F135 bail that not been the
ease. Sixes of IWO fell off today, while 5:41i5
rose the same amount. The amount or the
latter reported returned by the Steamer Java
ware much over rated, consequently there
was a small recovery. There Is no change in
7-3 as. NoW York quotations 102 - They are
slow of wile here at anything above 102.
The home stock market is without any
change of moment. Bank stocks are in de
mand, even at present high quotations. We
ay report sales of Allegheny National at 5S
and 59; of Bank of Commerce National at 10734;
of a small lot of 11. d IL National at (WA.
Fourth National offered at 105. Peoples Na
tional In request at 109. Exchange end CM
sena sought after, but none In the market at
reasonable figures. Railroad shares are quiet.

Menke for the week ending on Saturday last,
shows the enormous increase in loans daring

greater than same time last year. What is an
equally startling item in the statement is an
Increase of deposits during the week of 117,17ff,-

of the amount held at corresponding time last

this steady expansion of bank credits there
most be a corresponding advance of all prices.
The increase of specie, which Is mainly from
the May Interest on 5-Ins, Is timely for the
present renewal of the export demand.

There Is but little that is new in commercial
,natters. The demand for most of the leading
commodities has fallen oil somewhat, and
while the excitement which prevailed a few
days since has subsided, prices, nevertheless, I
are pretty well maintained.
AlMlES—Pearls art In demand, and in light
supply—sell readily at 18. Potash quiet at Bto
8%. Soda Ash dull ana nominal at 5% for com

UTTER—There wals some little Inquiry for
shipment to-day, but there is no improvement
in prices, ttse being thebest figure named for

EGOS—Firm, and with light arrwals, fresh

SEEDS—There is little or no inquiry for
either Timothy or Clover Seed. Owing to a lit
