Gold remains about stationary, fluctuating
in New York between I'M and ihn It trttel
=Tents. on the street this afternoon that it
had advanced to 129 in New York, but the ru
mor was without foundation in fact.
Government securities continue In request
at improvh,g prices, Ibe advance In Europe
and the case of the money market at home 'l.O
tending to make them desirable Investments,
temporarily if not permanently. The exemp
tion from taxation on these securities
also is not without • its effect upon private ln
dividuals, especially at tills time of year, and"
it is not improbale that the assessors may dis
cover that the personal property of merry
who have hitherto been quite heavy tax
payers, is largely represented by these non
taxable bonds.
—The New Tort Herald says that there is
every prospect that the prevailing monetary
ease will be long continued, as no funding or
Conversion process which the Treasury can
adopt will be likely to disturb the flow of
money in the least, if a long five per cent
loan Is ultimately put upon the market it will
te simply a bid for seven-thirty notes, and
it will have no chance of success un
less Congress previously legislates that the
interest on tiro-twenties is to be reduced to
limper cent with the privilege of conversion,
after the option accrues to the government .
In this connection we may mention that Olt r
71:11.800 of the five-twenty loan Is redeemable
on theist of Ilay next year, and the remainder
of the loan on the let of November, 1653. The
Treasury has wisely given notice that after
the let of May next the MPS or interest on
clearing-house certificates Will be reduced
from floe to four. per cent, and we trust that
this will speedily be followed by a roducuma
of the rates on the other temporary deposits
tut the Mime extent . . It trpreposterous for the
Treasury to bola more than a hundred and
twenty millions of this form of loan in time
of manic, and while its idle balance In the New
York Sub-Treasury, Including coin, is more
than ninetv•eeven and a half millions.

The river is cull rising steadily at this
point, with eleven feet full In the channel by
the pier marks last evening. Te!egret,* from
011 City report six feet In the channel there,
and eight feet at Plthole. The weather yester
was clear and cool, and very favorable for
business at the levee, which we regret to say,
eoutlnues exceedingly dull,
The Messenger, from Cincinnati, is the only
trastalent arrival we have to record. She had
a very good trip, including a large amount of
miscellaneous frel, ght, mostly for this city.

at
Eagle arrived and departed for Parker,
burg, and the Bayard, from the same point, is
duo here this mornin_g.
The Petrone. and Leclalre left for Oil City
last evening, and the Peerless is due hero
m there to-day. The Allegheny, trade, like
all others, is very dull, and we-are of the
opinion that the packets will have consider
able difficulty In making both ends meet.
The Messenger bee put up a sign for New
Orleans. Capt. McCarty, a well-known stea ui
boatman, has charge of the office, and Captain
Jesse Dean, formerly of the Camelm, iz in
command. •
......
Capt. J. H. Porter, who coil the steamer Sl--
ner at St. Lords the other day, end expects to
launch the hell of a new boat in a day or
two.
The Delaware, Capt.. R. W. Barton, will pos.
Rivet) , take bee departure (or St. Louis and
St. Paul to-day and passengers and shippers
should bear this fact In mind. Messrs. Stevens
and Stewart go out as her pilots
The Kate Putnam, Capt. Clark, is announced
for Cincinnati and Louisville forthwith,
also the Lorena, 'rapt. Shuman, from Saint
Loots.
The Silver Cloudoirbleh boat sunk neat stew
benville on Sniniay, has been successfully
rained, and she was expected to reach here
yesterday afternoon.
The Itobt. Moore and Pier Grove is. r.. ad.
verdant] to learn Cincinnati for Pittsburgh on
Tuesday, and the Argonaut and New fork
were loading at St. Lonis for Pittsburgh on
Monday.
We regret to announce the demise et Mr..
Hannah, wife of Mr. John Shedeen, an old and
well-known Steamboat engineer. She died
rather suddenly, and leaves 111 r. S. with seven
small children, the youngest of which is
babe.
It is said that the wages of Pittsburgh and
Cincinnati pilots have been reduced shout. s:,n
per round trip. The New Albany (Vniner,to/
has the following on this subject .
• Um:rents that the newspapers arc consolem-
Illy exercised about pilots wages. All the
river papers have been telling how hosts
could Make money since the pilots had come
down, and one would think from some td their
articles, that the pilots were a terrible set of
thieves. Now the fact is, just in proportion as
pilots wages come down, freights will he 1.1 . -
ried that much the ter. The consequence w iii
be oneb Captain will load his boat with cheap
freights, ruin the trade, lay up, and call upon
the pilots to combine, 113 they did once before,
so they can ran their tarots to make not h ends
