Certain members of the late Legislature
have bad records on the whole subject of
railroads. They either contributed to pack
Committees for the purpose of strangling
prope.-legislation, or dodged when divisions
1 involving measures of serious moment were
r to be taken, or voted squarely on the wrong
side.
.It will be safe to search out these
men, expose them to their constituent, and
prevent them from being again nominated
and elected. Let this lined policy be rig
idly pursued, without regard to persons,
and next winter - will witness the passage

is not unmindful of the Fenian movements
in this country, and especially in the north
east. We are not at liberty to suggest
what corns? the authorities intend to pur
sue when the exigency shall arise, but we
can say confidently that the Government
will not . ,permit any combination of men
whatever to entangle the United States in
-unnecessary - difficulties with friendly pow
ers. President Roberts, of the Fenian
Brotherhood, is in Washington. He is
open in his eondemation of the movements
on the northeastern frontier ; as, according
to his 'views, it will not aid the cause of
Irish Independence.—N. T. Tribune.

walls and making 'a hole in the roof to let
themselves in; then, breaking through an
other ceiling,„ they reached the upper tier
of cells, where they inquired of the pHs,-
oners for a prisoner named Evans, under
indictment for murder, but he had been ta
t, ken away to Brown county. They were
I very angry at their failure to releasa him.
They released and took away with them

Stephens completed his testimony before
the Reconstruction Committee on Thurs
day. Ile thinks the people of the South
have not yet been convinced that they had
no right to secede, or that the war settled
only ilea the North was powerful enough
to prevent Secession. He himself always
did, and does now, believe in due indepen
dent right of the States to secede. His tes
timony is very interesting and rotund.

framed, or is rather in course of fronting,
by the Judiciary Committee of the House,
which wit) provide certain rules of conduct
to be observed by the Clerk at the organi
sation of the Fortieth Congress. The

there is to be anpeliange in the same, it
should properly he offered as an amend
