RELIGIOUS INTELLIGENCE
Sismetme ago au article appeared in the
Independent on "Methodist Missions- and
the South," In which assertions were made
not in accordance with the real facts in the
case, at least such appeared to bk.-likely,
as Bishop Simpson felt it his duty to ad•
dress a letter to the editor of that paper, in
which he pronounced the statements incor
rect and injurious to the M. E. Chureh.
The article charges this denomination-with
making a distinction in its appropriations
to colored_ and, hite churches, and making
caste in the organization of conferences..
To these assertions the Bishop replies, in
brief, as follows: 1. There is no distinction
as to color recognized in the discipline of
the M. E. Church. 2. No such organiza
tion as a waste conference exists—no bar
rierto colored ndidsterabeing.received as a
member of n' conference. 3. The organi
zation of two conferences, where the col
ored ministry might meet together, did not
exclude white ministers from becoming
members, 4 The Missionary Board did
not make a separate provision for either
while or colored minister, nor for any white
churches, bat it did makespecific approprin
tions to aid colored people who had • been
turned out of their churches. No this lei
ter of the Bishop; the editor, Theodore
Tilton, replied to a long and racy leader, in
which he challenged the Bishop's declara
tion that "there is no distinction as to col
or recognized in the-Dia:2o%m of the M_;E.
Chula," and tsesames that while such MI
provision nay exist' that ;white ministers
will inst in such a case seek affiliation with •
colored-conferences, nor colored ministers
with'. whit. conferences. So Mr. Tilton

—Sixty years ago Protestants did not
dare to hold a meeting in Paris; now there
are in that city thirty-Seven places of Pro

and the government gives them full pm

these centres of gospel truth there goes

the leaven of pure and unselfish religion is
slowly but surely working out its legiti
