THE - CA.NDIDATE.
In common with many Inhabitants of this
city and county, and of other eonnties Sn
thinner' t sections of the Commonwealth, we
labored, to secure the nomination of the
Ron. J. K. MOOILISSAD as the Republican
candidate for Governor. • The reasons for
our preference have been fully and repeat
edly stated. All the efforts made In that
behalf, were unsuccesefott and we bow to
the decision of ,the Convention. Concert of
action in a political organisation can only
be obtained by a proper deference to the
will of the majority. We recognize the du
ty this rule imposes, and shall give to Gen.
Gnaur just the saute candid and efficient
Ruppert we should have challenged from
him — ind his friends had we been so fortu
nate as to gain the nomination of our first
EMS
And here we may m well remark, we
have felt neither personal nor political an
tipathy to Gen. Gr 6.117% Our preference ibr
Mr. N.IOOIIIIEAD grew out of his residence
here, his identificatioh with the interests of
this portion of the ContnatiOlidthr his con
spicuous abilities; his embient s 'civil servi
ces, and the reasonable claim of the West
to furnish the nominee. For Gen. GRAny
we feel a high regard. At the outbreak of
the war, he did not hesitate what course to
adopt, but promptly offered himself to the
Government for service In the field, nor
did he remit his endeavors until the rebel
lion was beaten down.
The objection has been raised against
him that he Is a recent convert from the
Democratic party, and is, therefore, liable
to suspicbm of unsoundness or infidelity.
We do not intend now to go'into the ques
tion of his party anteeedentin for the suf
ficient reason that we hold him to be a true
patriot and an honest man. Not that we are
unaenaltive to political treachery. But as
ha-se betrayals as we have had the misfor
tune to experience have been the work of
old-line whiga. Let us specify Tyler, Fill
more and Cowan. Opposed td these flag
rant curses, we recall the trueness and
constancy of Cameron, Wilmot, ttrow,
Moorhead and Forney. The inference is
that every man must be judged by himself.
We accept GEN. GEARY as a true, brave
man, and are ready for our share of the
work necessary to elect hint.
THE DEMOCRATIC PLATFORM.
Several points in this document are de
serving of special consideration.
I. The Democratic party has become an
abolition party. It agrees to stand by
the Constitutional Amendment prohibit
ing slavery. Herein is discovered the rea
son why the Democratic Jonruals and
orators no longer designate Republicans as
abolitionists, by way of reproach. That
epithet is dropped, and now opprobium is
expressed the word radical. Some en
conmiament is deducible herefrom. The
Democrats having got 'so far as to be Rho
litioniats, may some day get sense enough
to be radicals.
2 The democraticparty has progressed so
far as to demand of men elected to Con
gress, awl other high places of trust, that
they "bear true faith to the Constitution
and the laws." Five years ago they thought
BIICYIANAN, DAP29,,FLOYD and their asso
ciato conspirators; were the best bort of
demoCrats. Later, they had u warm admi
ration for Lea, JA.60305r, BSAIIR.EGAHD,
Bauculwarnon and that wholeseL We are
afraid that upon being pressed, so as to get
the truth out of them, it would have to be
rule:lifted that (trey have improved very
little since. , The last we heard of the ablest
mart among them, in-the ;Commonwealth,
Mr. Wm. B. liszn, he was toasting Juvran- -
sox Diva!, as the most exalted patriot in I
the Union. We have a suspicion they
would all do so if they thought it politic. I
3.. That they go in for attempting the
property • of black people from taxation,
and putting the difference an white folks ;
that is to say, they proclaim taxation with
out representation ia "tyranny," and then.'
go on to maintain that"the white rare alone
is entitled to the control of the govern-
merit" Of course democrats would not be
guilty 'of "tyranny," even towards black
men i The blacks • may think they have ,
some experience to the contrary, through I
long yearrrof democratic advocacy and
practice of slivery, but such fancy must
necessarily be disposed of as mental halitt-
eiranicm. We advise the negroes, never.
theleas, to watch and see if the democrats
let them ofehom tax-paying.
4. That the brave Soldiers and Sailors
who put down the Democratic. rebellion,
are entitledto "lasting gratitude." It is an
improvement to find the Democrats blench
a frame - of mind as to render thanks to
" - Cineoln's hirelings" for whipping them.
As no exceptions are made, the thanks
mast be tendered to black soldiers and sail
ors. Only think of it! a Democratic Con
vention expressing thanks t 4 'n . iggerr," for
"heroic services in defence of the Constitu
tion and the Union!" But then, it is easy
to see they mean the blacks shall have
nothing but thanks, for they stoutly, de
clare "the white race alone" shall monopo
lize places of honor and trust.
b. That each State has "the exclusive
right to to hate the nnalifications of its
our citizens." That is bad grammar, but
LOCUM that while black soldiers and
who fought to defend the
!don mast accept Democratic Maass, and
then eland hack, out of the way, white
rebele ehail walk up to the ballot boxes
and vote each other into office, and the gov
ernment they tried to destroy, shall not
stop them.
-"--The Party and Platform are exactly
suited to each other.

"Gen. Howard returned from two weeks'

General Howain has been repeatedly
nail conspicuously referred to in this con

!tlisnt that the President expressed to him
iipprobation of the Freedmen's Bureau
Bill, was incorrect, he would, before this,
have publicly said so.
THE "Family Trerr:sure, - a religion/1
monthly published in this city, gives the
fallowing Choice bit of secular intelligence
to its readers:
" • Restoration' is now the absorbing
thought and theme, with politicians, states
men, and editors. Did the seceding States
commit suicide, and can they come to life
synin only in the inchoate condition of Ter
ritories, and then progress by a long pupil
age, under tutors and governors appointed
by the Central power, and finally attain the
rights and privileges of full States only by
',clouting constitutions and laws, dictated
to diem? Or was secession unconstitution
al. and so, rual and void as regards thepolit
ical existedffof the States? Did It affect
only individuals—the men who participated
in it, making them traitors, but leaving the
l•t'fal citizens, many or few, to be still the
St de with the unalienated right to resume
state functions as soon as they were releas
...l from the domination of the usurpers?
- President Johnson takes the latter view;
while a majority hi Congress seem to incline
I to the former."
President JOHNSON did take this view
hen he was Military Governor of Tennes
see, holding that If there were but five
ihousand loyal men in that State they
should bold the exclusive right to govern
it but he now holds that the States are to
day Just where they were before the rebel
, lion, and that every man who was a voter
then rbould be a voter nnw, whether loyal
disloyal, and none other. As it is int
portant. the people should know the real
facts in such a else, we venture to cormst
i the unintentional error of the "Trrnnure."
P4ISTIN ASTER GEN EBAt.LE2IUSON denies,
is a pubUsbed letter, a report that the pat
ronage of his Department is to be used

vigorous maintertancetuld success of the
Union Republican party, and Its continued
