A correspondent of the Meadville Republi
can, writing from Oil City, Febrclarr%tit, gives
the following account of the flood at that
place:
I arrived in 011 City Saturday Just In time to
son one of the gloomiest alights that it it the
lot of oil open:dater to witness. Jest as I got
to the Oil Creek bridge, the ice In the creek
gave way with a tremendous crash, sweeping
away derricks, engine hon nes, workshops, and
everything on the banks of the creek! An lee
gorge up the creek had broken up and came
doyen crashing and roaring as though all Un
cle Sam's engines of war had been let loose to
thunder the doom of this land of ell adventu
rers—for doomed It really seems to be. The
floating mass lodged about twenty rods above
the bridge and remained there a couple of
hours, affording the inhabitants of the shan
ties along the creek a little tune for moving
their goods and chattels. At last It commen
ced moving amid the cheers of the excited
spectators whO had congregated at,a safe Ms-

time it gave way with a loud report,
stiller to heavy thunder, andawept away

of the creek—among others a large throe story

foundation fully sixteen inches, and will cer
tainly be carried away. Workmen had been
eogeged lo building the R., 0. C. & P. Roll way

nearly completed, but the flood threaten. to
destroy all the work. The lee has gorged be.
law the bridge and the water and ice is rising
at the rate of ten inches per hour. A still
heavier gorge started f ont Ronsville about an
hour ago, and it is feared that Oil City will be
among the waste places when it comes down,
the lee already being gorged higher than some
parte, of the town. The eastern pan of the
town incompletely inundated. Your corres
pondent had to paylifty cents toe boatman to
reach the bridge, a distance of twenty feet
from the shore. 'Great excitement prevails

Crude and Refined dealers, and the present

arguing that the supply will In all probability
