Th,,t portion of Western Pennsylvania

the I:egheny river and the Ohio State line,
is a district of the tituties and resouretw

exarained it, have any proper conception.
W e propose to give, in a summary way,
the result of our own observations made a
few days ego in an-excursion through the
valley gf the Shenango to Meadville, am! of
facts gathered from the statements of n

It is of the broad and beautiful valley of

.extensive iron works, including smoking
furnaces,. besides numerous smelting far
e tutees in other localities. In addition to the
real used by these works, hundred, of
thousands of tons are shipped annually by
;1 rail and canal to Cleveland, Erie and other
lake ports.
This coal is for the most part between Mur
and five feet thick in the vein, and is some
what harder and less cubical in its fuss are
Man the Pittsburgh coal. It contain,, more
carbon - rind less bitumen than the latter, and
burns with less flame and it:Ss smoke, leav

end of that county, together with the east
ern and central parts of Mercer oninty, that
perhapt the heaviest coal formation in
Western Pennsylvania is found. It appears
to extend from about the middle of Mercer
county entirely through Butler county, to
the Allegheny river, at, above and below
Bra. dy'S-BetuL Of Its width in a north told

entire length of the valley of the Shenango,
and near to that river for a greater part of
the way, affording direct access hoth to
this city and to Erie. In addition to that.
the Pittsburgh and Erie Canal, whith still
does a large business in heavy freights,
principally coal and Lake Superior ore,
-follows the Shenungo throughout Its entire
length. The Cleveland and llalioning road
will soonbe extended to the Pittsburgh and
