EVA. Gazette e—Natioril again will keep upper
most. Our repreeentatives try to address Mem
el:three to the routine work of legislation ; but it M
no O. No one has stomach for anything but the
discussion of what is foremost in every mind—the
struggle to maintaie the integrity of the govern
ment.
In the House, the drat thing done was the offer—
ing of the Chtcago Platform, entire, in a aeries of
resolutions as adopted at Chicago; for adoption as
the voice of penveylvania. The resolution. wet.
offered by Mr. Hcfius, of Mercer county. The
House, however, refused to proceed to their sec
ond reading.
A resolution was then offered inviting the
Wide Awakes to use part in •the ceremonies of
Ina•guration on Tuesday next. The Holm post
poned it by a vote of• 47 to 44.
By this Hive, the majority were ashamed of the
treatment awirded Mr. Hodes' resolutions, and •
motion (a reconsider prevalled,6o to 37. The tea
ciliations were then put on second readier, and a
debate ensued occupying the entiro union, the
House adjourning at the regular hour without dis
posing of them.
In the Semite, a few petition. were prmented
and one or two tills reported, and a resolution
adopted to creath a new Standing Committe of fire
on the Federal Aelatioae ; when Nth. Smith , . rein.
lullone on the National Crisis came up and ocapied
both a morning and afternoon minion, the diocua

of secession or coercion, and in anon to a re-
quest from the same ge adman; to point oat what
wu objectionable in the 95th and 96th sections of
the Code, ho confined himself to generaliues, and to
the fact that the repeal of those motion s had been
largely petitioned lor.
Mr. bitClure culled attention to the fact that the
resolutioas al Mr. Welsh proposed to repeal a
section of the law guaranteeing the writ of habeas
cmpus4td to establish Slavery in Pennsylvania ;
that neither Mr. Wharton nor Mr. Welsh, bad in
theirspeeehm touched open the distinctive paint. in
their own amendments; and that they were both
hostile to the grand principle which underlies all
free goversmentsokat tho normal condition of
Man and the Soil, as they come from the hand of
Cod, is that of Freedom. He wanted those gee.
tlemes to stand up to their own positions, and not
shrink the discussion or them.
Mr. Welsh replied by defending (be peculiar
features of big resolutions referred to by Mr.
fillClari, puttiog the beat lace possible on those
propointions.
Mr. - Laadoo, the Soutar from liradford, followed
in the ablest speech I have yet herd on the floor
of the Senate, It was bold, manly and elcquent,
and be held the Senate spell-bound by his aplend id
oratory,. receiving the congratulations of nearly
eery Senator at its dose. He opposed concesmon
and compromise ; and them was so much marrow
in his utterances that they wended( peculiarly en
couraging, after the vaporing of the concareioniste
to which we have been compelled ,to listen for
some days put. He portrayed the wrongs NOrth
ern men-have been compelled to coffer in the Rooth;
the sacrifice of the rights of free speech and a free
press ; and said that before the South asked as to
concede anything to them, they mast themselves
observe the obligaticins imposed upon them by the
Constitution. There is nothing, he contended,
which the North can honestly or honorably eon
cede; and the orly alternative to non-concession
it to Mend by shay government, strengthen its bands
and innint anon the maintenance of the Constitution
and the Union and the enforcement of the Laws
It is the duty, be geld, of Pennsylvania not only to
