Scroftila, or King’s Evil,
i« a constitutional disease,:® corruption of tho
hlooi or -which this fluid becomes vitiated,
and' poor. Being in the circulation, it
pervades the whole body, :and may burst out
m disepso on any port of it. No organ is free
from its attacks, nor is there one which it may
not destroy. The scrofulous taint i* variously
caused by mercurial diseisc, low living, dis
ordered or unhealthy, food, impure air, filth
and filthy habits, the depressing rices, and.
; Above all, by the venereal infection. -What
ever be its origin, it is hefreditary in the con
stitution, descending •• from parents to children
unto the third and fourth amentum ;*’ indeed,
it seems to be the rod ofHim who says, “ I
will visit the iniquities of the fathers upon
their children.’* * -
Its effects commence bydeponuon from tne
blood of corrupt or ulcerous matter, which, m
tho longs, liver, and internal organs, is tamed
tubercles; in the glandv swellings; and <m
. the surface, eruptions or sores. This foul cor
ruption,- which genders iri the blood, depresses
the energies of me, so that scrofulous constitu
tions not only suffer^-from scrofulous com
plaints, butthey have far less power to with
ftand the atUcka of other diseases; conse
quently, vast numbers tperish by disorders
whichT although not scrofulous in their nature,
are still rendered fatal by this taint in the
system'. Most of the consumption which de
camatea the human familjpxaa itff origm directly
i ih this ecrafidous contadunatiem; and many
I destructive diseases of kidnej's, bram,
and, indeed, of all the pfgans, arise from or
are aggravated by the same esuse.
I One quarter of all ourjpeople me sciofulon*;
! their persons are invaded, by this lurking m-
I fection, and their health ns undemuned by it.
| *i* o cleanse it from the we must renovate
I the blood by an alterative medicine, and m-
I. rigorate it by_ food and «xer«-se.
