Garibaldi Ana gratified and almost outetirpped
public impatience. The preparation, the depar
ture. the landing, the quick euceesaion of deci
sive battles, and the surrender of the Royal army
have followed each other almost as rapidly as
telegraphs could tell them. We alt and ace it
altpais rapidly cooled clap our heeds, growing
iMpatient it the curtain should be let down be
tween the acts This guerilla chief, slihougb

. -two millions of people, mill makes war like a
guerilla chief- That promptitude which sue-
cess stamps as wisdom and which failure brands
as rashness in, in Ilia oiroumerimeem. the only 1
chnnev . of victory. IViLh guns and forts, and
trained armies, sad regular Generals vented in
the regular strategy of modern warfare as his
enemies, with brave, ardent fellows, destitute 1
of everything but stout heave and strong limbs
as his supporters, Garibaldi had to Jo all by dash,
or not at all. Ile has done it. He has forced
his way into Palermo, halms beaten the King's
army, he has driven them into their forte, sad.
he has obliged them to admit their ioferiority
by coneenting to capitulate. Feat upon the in
telligence that the capitulation had been com
pleted, and that the 25,000 soldiers of the King's
array were going forth under the pressure of the
pstriotiabands which had beaten and surround•
ed them, comes the news that the capitulation
has been broketi, that the forts and vessels again
opened fire upon the city, that the insurgents
have resumed their arms and are swarming
round the army, that the city is barricaded, and
that amid the devastation which is going on the
troops are deserting, and even a Neapolitan Gen
eral hue gone over to the popular cause. The
procession of great events is rapid enough, but
`rinhippily we have themes yet only iu outline.
Garibaldi le the hero for the present age, when
steam and electricity have so spoilt us for endur
ing the tardiness of old tidings that we should,
perhaps, it we got Cmear's celebrated despatch,
quarrel with the comma which eeparates the eidi
from the cid. . Bat still, when we have quenched
our thirst for news, we yearn for a long, quiet
enjoyment, of the details.
Unfortunately, Sicily le an island. What 10
still worse, Sicily is au island, the surrounding
waters of which ore in Possession of a Soot hoe•
tile to the Sicilian cause. We cannot hope that
the Neapolitart.Gavernment will be polite enough
to forward the Sicilian accounts of those Royal
victories which shine 190 gaudily in - t heir official
garb. That this rush of events is all chronicled
and well described for up, we are tolerably sure:
but when these accounts will reach tie, it in tut.
possible to guess, as from hour to hour we wait
for them. liven, however, from the iufortastion
before us now, we eau underatand that the orig
inal poeitiono of Garibaldi and the Neapolitan
Generals are counter•changed. It is °emeriti
Looses position which is desperate, and it is
Garibaldis which is secure. It °auto' be oth
er vise. Although we want details, the, events
speak for themselves. Luna would never hard
proposed or consented to capitulate if he had
any hope of maintaining hie ground at Palermo.
The order of the Court to remain and bombard
the city. is an order to remain and be destroy
ed. This may suit the selfish policy of the Nea
politan tyrant. Ile may prefer that hie eoldiera
should be rather massacred, red-handed with
the blood of his subjects, thou return to Naples
defeated and discouraged. to spread about in the
King`a own home dominioha a practical contra.
diction of those fabled victories which had been,
ported up in the streets of Naples. Nosh at
spectacle of defeat would have been, perhaps, an
encouragement to revolt. Better that they should
do what massacre they con and then perith, or
better even that they should go oeer to the ene
my, titan come home and proclaim by their pres
ence that Garibaldi is triumphant and the Boor-
bon power broken. Again it is said that there
were 4,1100,000 of scud% in the Treasury at Pal
ermo. It is certain that there are in the forte
arms and storm, to equip ail the youth of Sicily,
and lona to make the harbor an uncomfortable
anchorage for Nrapoliiso *hips of war. Fran
cis il might well believe that, happen what
might, nothing could he much worn* fur him
than the capitulation which had been eigued by

perhaps, have Bald in hisdefeuee that he brought
25,000 men to surround the throne of his Sove
reign and to protect his continental Uoutinious
from the attack which wat certainly impentliog.
The King, however, does not seem to place much
value uponthese nm. lie evidently thinks that
the army which could nut or would not kmp

Oyer or the will' to keep him out of Naples.
