Rale w»i decidedly anti-slavery. Any change at
tbie tlmr, by initniog a new teat of membsnblp,
woold destroy all tbe conservative power of the
Choreh in tbe border Conferences; and said tbe hold
log 0 r » slave may be, and among oar people is,
withoat their consent and bejood their control. Tbe
purchaser of a elate among oaf members Is exceed
ingly rare. Nioe-tenths of held came to
them by lnberltaoce or marriage. La many cues
neither husband nor wife has voluloo or control In
tbe matter. They are entailed on the children, and
tbe law will not admit of emancipation. The law
compels no man to boy or to sell, bat it does compel
men to bold. Holding, therefore, mey be ■ matter ,
of ntemifp—bay log er selling Is always a matter of 1
choice. Will any m.n say, tbco, that holding is in,
tbe same position as baying or selling? "While al
lodiog to the bitter warfare of extremists in tbe
North on those Hvicg on the border, the garel fell,
and be was compelled to yield tbe floor.
Rev. 0. Moody (ben obtained tbe floor and delir
ered a speech rmacklng stroogly of tbe Garrisonian
•t)!e. He favored the resolution, and gave a com
ber of reasons for doing so. 1. Reduces man from
the ooodliion end pervgatires of manhood to tbe
ooodition of a thing; 2. It interposes between man
and bis Maker an authority inconsistent with the
freedom necessary to a moral agent; 3. It chattel
lies Ood’e only earthly Image, and sells in shackles
those for whom Christ died to make free. The rest
were of a similar kind as tbe above. After giving
these reasons as a platform for discussion, be-Ueliv
ered a speech of the most ultra kind, wholly foreign'
to the putnt et Issue. No one to the body denied tbe
sm of slevehtUtog.
Tbe real qoestion before the Conference and the
Church Is, whether the Cburob sboold or should not
discriminate between buying or selling and the mere
holding of slaves. Tbe ultras want a rule that will
not discriminate, bat refase membership to ell who
bold slaves. Tbe conservative or moderate-toeed
anti-slavery member* contend that tbe present Bolt
is decidedly aoti sUveiy, and bears dbect testimony
against tbe cursed evil, and U therefore doing much
toward forming an anti-slavery sentiment in tbe
border States, such es Missouri, Maryland, Virginia,
do. Mr. Moody was followed by Rsv. N. Wilson,
from Baltimore, who took tbe lama ground at Mr.
Ccombe.
