Messrs. Editors:—in the first Tolome of Irving's
doaertedly popular Life of Washington, at pege
187, in noticing the vote of ; thanks of the Vir
ginia-House of Delegates to Washington and his
fellow-soldiers, during bis first nempoign in
1764, Mr. Irvfogstyr. “From ibis voisof thanks
two officers were oxeeplod—if# or Stcb c, who was
oharged with’qowardice,and Jacob Tan Bream.”
I was excited when I read.that seote&oe, aod
; at once famished to the New York Atoms an
article eonclaelvelyproving the inoorveotness of
this qharge against Btobo. Tbearttols was pub
lished, and at the end of the seoond volume of
the work there was a note of odrrectloo, stating
tha* “the nam* should have been Must instead
of Slobo,’ 1 and adding: vlt (the error) hu been
corrected in tbs stereotype plates, and wilt not
appear injfolore emissions.”
Yet in the new and beautiful 'edition of the
work lately issued, the error appears as before,
io volume first, page 137, and the oorreellognote
it tbe end of-volume seoood is omitted, s.
i This looks like a studied, deliberate attempt
to perpetuate a most groundless aod preposter
ous calumny against a soldier, of .most signal
Courage—a soldier who was complimented by
tbs Cpmoauder-jo Cblef of the British troops
U America, by the Governor; of Virginia lu a
message to-tbe Legislature aod to whom that
body voted oqb thousand pouods ‘‘over and above
his pep" for hie tool ia tfae ; service of the coun
try, aod to whom that same body also passed a
special direct vole of thanks ‘'for kit singular
bravery and eauraye exerted on ali oecatiom during
the prumt war.**
Tbs obsrgeof oowsrdios against Slob© is real
ly a most extravagantly abaurd one. ;,Had r hs
beeo oharged with recklessness or foowtrdinetv,
tbe accusation might have possessed somtkhndow
of plausibility, or bad tba charge been for for
gery or murder, there would have been tome dif
ficulty lo proving it faty, but to aocose Stobo of
oowardloo Is almost as absurd as It would bo to
tay the sou is tbe cause of cold.
How this strange revival of ao absurd, explo
ded and acknowledged oalumoy occurred, It is
difficult to conceive. C.
Toe Book—One of tbe moat inter
sstlog works extant lu Eogleod, is tbe Domes
day Book, belonging to tbe crown. We have
had the pleasure of examining U; it isdn three
volumes, written upon paichment. This re
markable oompilatioo wee commenced about the
year 1084, and completed about 1080. At a
meeting of the London aod Middlesex Archaoot
logical Society recently, Bev. Thomas Huge read
an intereelitig paper descriptive of ibe Domes
dayJJ&ok, from which we propose mekloga few
extracts. Its Eogllih name of Domesday has
been variously Interpreted. By eooe it has
beeo held to refer to tbe d»y of doom, from the
mlnnieoesi end uusparisg nature oflte details;
while by others it has beeo said to derive its
name from the fact that It was deposited io the
King's treasury, ia tbe church of Winchester, at
Westminister, and io e particular place iu'oue
of those obarehee called Domus Ded. It was
greatly valued, aid kept uoder three locks and
keys, in tbs custody of tbe auditor, chamber
lain, and deputy ebamberlaio of the exchequer.
Soon after its completion it was removed to
Westminister; wee, in IC9C placed io tbe Chap
ter House, and remained there uotil a very re
cent period, when It frond a safer and belter
plaoe of deposit in the new Record House at
tached to tbe Rolls Chapel. Tbe following is
the mode of Its compilation. The inquisitor,
upon the oath of the. sheriff, tbe lords of each
< manor, tbe presbyter of eaoh church, the revepe
of every hundred, the bailiff, and six vtllaiie
of every village, were lo inqire into tbe several
particulars—tbe name of tne place, who held it
in the time of King Edward,'who wee Ibe

how many eolteri, how_n»aoywrivi, what fres

lity of wood, how maoy tenants aod pastures,
wbat mills and fish ponds, how much added or

muoh each freeman or eocum bad of has. JkU
was to be triply estimated: first, as the estate
was held In ibe time of tbe Confessor; lieu as
it was bestowed by Kiog William; and, thirdly
wbat its value stood at time of tbe formation of
ihesurvey, aod whether any advantage could
be made in value. It may easily be oobesived
thutbls ioqolaUiou was not very popular.
• Borne of ibe oustoma and services of those
times were very interesting; for iostsnes, here
are some lathe city of Chester. If any free
man committed aod added murder to
the crime, all fate property was forfeited by the
King, and himself mads an outlaw. Any one
guilty of blood-shed between tbe Monday morn
log and tbe ninth hour of Baturdsy, was to for
feit ten shUnogi; if from tbe ninth hour of Bet
orday to Monday morning, twenty shillings ;
on gnat festivals mafaslaverys forfeited four
pounds; ca otber days forty shillings. If a fire
happenedfo tbe.eity, the person at whose house
it broke but forfeited three eme of twenty
pence bach. Anyman or woman giving false meso
ura, or selling adulterated beer, forfeited four
shillings, or was placed Id tks dung obalr. We
mlght go od, did space aliened, and give esany
interesting extracts from tblsfamouswork. At
some future time we may have occasion to refer
to it again.— Gorrttponaenee of tSe fhiladelphia
