WASHINGTON. CITY, March 17.—We bare Now Or
leans dates of Tuesday last. By the fire in Hous
ton on the 3d Inst., nearly two squares, embracing
thirty houses, were destroyed. All the buildings la
the block above Congress and west of Alain Areal',
excepting . four, were burned, and on the opposite
side of Alain street, the entire block, except six
buildings, was consumed. The largo wholesale es
tablishment of Kelsey, Sites .2. Co., was saved. The
loss is estidiated at $225,000.

MAI.LOT'H SritiON, Mardi 17.—Daniel Hayden,
a resident of this county, was arrested by a State
warrant at this elation to-day, at noon, ohugral with
an attempt io poison one Ashworth, and family, also
residents of this county. The attempt was made
about a year ago, by patting red precipitate, corro
sive Sublimate and arsenic, In corn meal, which lode!
ily, however, was not taken by they family, owing to
the peculiar stench of the poison. Hayden was not
suspected of perpetrating the art,l until a few days
since, when, in a Slate of intoxicatian, he disclosed
tho affair to POlDelpereons liriog hero, with the threat
that if they divulged it, ho would kill them. A for
mer wife of Mr. Ashworth died a month previous to
the happening of :the above, and experienced physi
cians gave it as their opinion that eke woe poisoned.
