The wickedness of the wicked is proverbial and keeps pace witb the rapid strides of improvemenL no western city, except, perhaps St.:lmuls, will you gee so many Pittaburghers. At every turn you will meet with familiar, aces—aome temporary so journers and others deeply engrossed M the battle of life; among whom we name, Mr. Don't W. Ross, so well and favorably known In Rail road circles, Mr. George M'Bride, the twist of Clark & Co. ' of Pittsburgh, andtwo members the Forsyth family--Jacob and Robert. Ere the boar of noon had arrived the care of the Illinois Central Railroad were whirling ell southward to'Calro. Your readers are doubtless aware that this great thoroughfare—running from Danleith in the upper part of the State (Illinois) to Cairo, the lower end, as well ale the branch teem Chicago intersecting the main' line --woo through a-portion of the moat fertile and beautiful part of the State. Tho rename of this company are ouch that It is only, ippa reedy, a question of time when it will be highly productive to its stockholders. Like all railroad corporations it has had lie "..11.7 of trial." The company have offered settlers ouch good induce memo to phrchase their land along the line of the road, that hundreds and thousands have availed thetheelves of the offer. Already thwne are springing up all along the road and betuitiful farms lnc high state of cultivation are of fre quent occurrence. The improvements of the company at Cairo are still going forward and greater facilities offered for the transportation of paesengers and freight. The recent opening of the great railroad un dertaking from Cairo to New Orleans (Wept twenty miles by, boat) will give a fresh impetus to travel to the eastern Miles. The road is now in working order, and the time required to travel by this route from the "Crescent City" Is the mouth of the Ohio Is 111 , hours. When plun gers arrive at Cairo, the beet route and quickest is by the Illinois Central to Chicago; thence by tho Pittaborgh, Ft. Wayne & Chicago and Penn. sylvania Railroads to Philadelphia, via Pitts burgh. This route will, doubtless, become the favorite one, as it should be, because it offers the greatest inducements . hould travel 'take this direction in reaching the eastern eitlee, wo look for stirring timee on thin grand thorough fare. A few moments chat with the gentlemanly Superintendent of the Illinois Central, Mr. W. R. Arthur, as we were about stepping into the cars for Cairo, indicated that he was the right man for the place, and folly equal to the times. On another occasion wo gave a detailed Re count of the oily of Cairo. Every year, how. ever, marked. improvements take place. 'The building of a wide levee, encircling the entire city, was a grand undertaking and an expensive one. It has proved a success so far as protec tion of this kind can afford. As moat of the buildings are wooden, fires are very nommn. In consequence of this, Insurance is held al ex orbitant figures. During the put year over fifty buildings have been erected. Among the structures built, or finished, ie the capacious St. Charles Hotel. The main building to about 100 feet front with one large wing and appro priate back buildings, five stories high. The house is well kept and travelers need not shun this place hereafter because of the want of good hotel acconimodatimui. Messrs. Ragsdale, Elm. ber Sir. Co. aro the proprietors. All the other public houses aro nuisances and 'of the low groggery type. After einne delay at Cairo for a good boat, the favorite steamer New Uncle Sam came along, G. W. Stewart, commander, and Mr. Ethel, clerk, and after five days' 'deeming we reached New Orleans in eafety. The number of passengers was not large—large - enough for comfort sad to enjoy the society of travelling acquaintances. All who have floated on theso palaces are Oran of the high privileges enjoyed by the fair ones. Happy, say we, is the fortunate one of the ster ner sex who enjoys a roving commission in either cabin. Time hung lightly on our bands, and no wonder! Ra had music from stringed and brass instrumente, and also on the piano with the voice accompaniment of the Misses Winotandly and Stewart'—members of the Captain's family, and others of the lady passengers. During the trip the Sabbath came round. By request a sermon was delivered in the ladies' ca bin by an Episcopal minister, named Rev. Mr. Shaver, en route for the Interior of Terse. Quite a number attended the service. This minister just previous to his assumption of orders resided in Pittsburgh. For some time post he has been • officiating in the interior of Indiana. Fortunately for sightseers, all the large cities and towns on the Mississippi river were pinned in daylight. Memphis, Vicksburg, Natchez and Baton Rouge are on the onward march of Im provement. Tho railroads will doubtless benefit the three former named. Persons who travel southward should not take Natchez under the bill. Climb the ascent, and on the top you will lie greeted with a beautiful sight. Some of the towns along this enakey water course are evi. dently finished, or will be BOOM Progression is not a part of their vocabulary—rather the stand still policy seems to be in the ascendant. Bet bore we are at Now Orleans. Here a vast field opens up, but wo must con tent ourself with introducing our Pittsburgh friends who preceded as to the "Sunny South." Among the Pitteburghers found on arrival, we name Mr. John B. Dilworth, senior member of the enterprising firm of Shriver & Dilworth, Mr. Edward House, of the large house of John I. HOMO & CO.. Mr. Wm. Holmes, of the old house of Wm. Holmes & Co., and Capt. William Dawson, who represente the firm of Graff & Sumner.
