Qdllegt, Tuesday t Feb, 14, 18GQ.—-Last evening
- -> it 7j. cclook,. a very respectable audience
-v. vKad assembled; to listen j to a .lecture from
v Honorable H, ,F. French, of. Exeter, N.
H., on Farm Drainage. Mr; French’e reputation
as author of tho best work jet published la this
s country upon this enbjeot, (had given ns reason
; to expect a valuable lecture, and the interest
with vhiohall listened to jhis plain statements
of facU,is good evidence that wo were not dls
.n- appointed. v ; / ■«• .. -{. •
The general Bubjeot of drainage; eald bo In
cludes nob only form drainage, but the drainage
i of cdliea r aad;bighway. drainage. One of the
?. greatest sources of deterioration of land in this
country iB produced by carrying dhe elements
of fertility to the cities, in jthe forrik of produce,
i- and allowing it to bo wished into the rivers and
lost. Efforts havo been made.in some places to
• carryback these elements bf fertility by means
of a system of drains. This hoa already been
donolitt_Edinburgh. • Highway.drainage Is Im
portant totbc farmer, and I have xio doubt that
one dollar expended in thoroughly removing the
water from roads by means of good
: drains would accomplish more than several dol*
lars spent in carting dirt onto them. City and
•. road drainage form no part of firm drainage,
and of this I shall proceed ioepeak.
r Tho first question vrhlcb presents itself to our
consideration ie, what-dand requires draining?
* - flomo say all land requires it, but this la n falls.
4 by.. Thera is a vast amount of land whloh would
not bematerially improved by thlaprooess. The
greater part of New-Eoglaridis already naturally
ondcrdraiaefl. AUlan<i, however,;wMch is over
flowed in the summer, such-* os marshes and fens,
requires drainage. Thereto thousands of acres
of this description along opr sea boast,. whloh,
Unclaimed, Would be maoh more valuable than
r our upland. Tho Lincolnshire fens tire of this
description, and they now produce more than 60
bnahtiaof wheat t<s tho acre. A like iq Holland,
containing 40,000 acres, whloh was thirteon feet
below tide-water, has bcenireolaimed and is now
in a high Btate of oultivalion. Embankments;.
. are built to shut out the tide and the water as
r pumped out by iteam-ppwer. Second, wo have
all over the country swamp and bog land. Since
1860 the General Government has given 60,000,
OOQ of this land to the Stakes in whloh It Is sit*
nated, and there is much {more already in tho
hands of cultivators. These ewampa contain tho
: : deposits of oenturies, and if drained, would be
valuable. Third, all dry land whloh is too wet
to till, and too wet for thei crop during growth,
■- should bo drained. By this means it may be
caltivatedono orjtwo monthsearlierin the Spring,
. which is often a great advantage,' Land on side
/ hiUo which is cold, and from whloh springe burst
t out, needs draining.
In England it has been [estimated by compe
tent engineers that one half of i'the land needs
draining, and so Wjdl bis tho work been begun,
; - that 1,260,000 acres have been completed. In our
Western Btatc3 there of one*
third and oven one-half of tho crop of wheat,
which is no doubt caused by want of drainage.
In£nglaud*ihpavcroge yield of Wheat is about
28buehols to the aero, while in thie coantry it
is only nine bußhela. One! of the cauees of the
greater yield in that country Is no doubt altrib
i utable to under-drain b-J Tho: nbocsstity of
draining depends in part upon the qonantUy of
-rain that falls daring the year. InEogland this
never amounts to more than 24 Inohea and they
never 'have a fallcxceedlog on Inch la twenty
four hours; the average in New-England is
about forty-two tochca, and frequently wo have
a fall of tjro inches in twenty-four hours. From
this wests the greater importance of adopting
some means for carrying off all that is not ac
cessory to the growth of tho crops. 8o again,
the necessity for underdralolog depends in part
on the depth to whloh the land; freeze.s Land
that is full of water freexes deeper in Winter
and cannot be worked early in the spring, be
sides tho oddness of snob soils often produces
decay in seeds and thus a failure In the crop.
Draining wool! remedy this tow great oxtent.
At thiapoint Mr. French’s hour waa up, and
ho persisted in closing, though; many were in
, favor ofhk continuing his lecture.
