A Sesuulab AjyAra,—One of the most singu
lar phenomena we have beard of for some time
put, was related to ns yesterday by Mr. Wn.
Whilely, an engineer upon the Northern Central
railway. Ho stated that on Friday night last,
ho was running a freight train over tho road,
and when near Lutherrillo station, aboat ten
miles from Baltimore, he was suddenly startled
by seeing directly before him what be supposed
to bo tho front light of another engine coming
towards him—not over a hundred yards distant
He immediately blew tho whistle to put down the"
brakes, and finding that hTwas about to run
upon it, he reversed the engine and did every
thing in his power to stop, but finding it Imps*
stblc, he gave the alarm to the fireman and rush
ed to tho rear of the engine for the purposo of
jumping off to save bis life; when, upon turning
again to taka another, look ahead, ho was com
pletely astounded by tho discovery that tho
light hod dleappcarcd, but where to, or bow, no
ono was able to say. Tho story Is substantiated
by all those who were upon Iho train, who atato
that they all saw tho light directly ahead very
distinctly, and rslher larger than the usual front
light. After running a short distance the train
was slopped, and those engaged upon It insti
tuted a search for tho caoeeof this mysterious
light, but all their efforts were in vain, as thero
was no light of any kind to bo seen in the enlirp
neighborhood. The light was entirely too largo
to have been the reflection from a hand lanlarc.
