In 1784 ho was appointed, in doDjnnotion with

thematical reputation.

a fortunate turn had not been given to tho dispute.
Johisonr'had very rudely said; “Sir what do
you know io America, you never read. You
have so books thore.” “Pardon me, sir,” re*
plied Dr.. Ewing; “Wfrhave read the Rambler."
Th? civility instantly pacified him, and after, the
reat of tho company had retired,; he sat with Dr.
Ewing until midnight, speaking amicably and
eloquently, and&Uering such wisdom as seldom
falls from tho Dps of man: -Habuibos Hall.
